Well, most people would say that it's not worth it. You'd be better off selling your car and getting an actual 5-speed model. Just giving you a heads up on what responses to expect.

    Auto to Manual

Hey whats up peoples. I was just wondering how practical it was to swap out my automatic transmission from my 99 Corolla CE into a 5 speed manual. How would I go about doing it, and like I said, how practical is it? Thanks.

aight, thanks for the tips guys. But just out of curiousity, how much would it cost and how hard would it be to actually go through with it?

cost? couldn't tell you. i know you have to get a whole other gearbox, as well as the shifter and a different set of pedals(so you have a clutch).

it's a shame our transmissions aren't set up like the saturns...those are easy to install an aftermarket paddle shift system that doesn't need a clutch.

but its still a saturn. cost wise my friend wanted to do it to his 65 mustang. with the parts that he collected they still wanted 2000 dollars. the labor on transmission work is out of this world. just buy a 5 speed. i know in a corolla 5 speeds are few and far between but if you just want to learn there are plenty o them avaliable.

...saturns have better repair records than most other GM products...but that's besides the point. i'm not talking about it as a saturn, but as a technology.

Damn this thread got long! hey Sriram, how much are you selling the parts for? and are you sure thats all im going to need? Im thinking maybe i should just get a performance shop or a dealer shop to do it instead of using my amateur mechanic skills..

what a mission thank god I can get it all done for 1700 at the dealer :) now to get more hours or another job to pay for that shit...See yall are right its easier to just buy a 5spd rolla and what not but that means ur giving up on your ride which means your a quiter (my spelling sucks) I personally thought about buying a 5spd rolla but looking at my car and the abuse she takes from me and how shes always ready for more just makes me want to stick with her and build her up. Anyhow good luck to Jake on your swap...considering we got the same car and model let me know how it goes if u end up doing it before I do.

wow. ok. i didnt know the impact it had on my trade-in value. Def98rolla, I totally feel what you say. I feel the exact same way about my car. THat's why I was considering the transmission swap instead of a brand new car. WEll thanks guys for your help. I guess its up to me now.

But if you think about it your going to spend 1700 on your car and make it depreciate at least 800 dollars. so your wasting about 2500 bucks.....

the only reason for the $800 depreciation is because of the necessity for the computer to control the transmission rather than the driver. technology costs money. at any rate...on the performance standpoint, do it. put in a decent clutch and lightweight flywheel while you're at it....

    and the shift cables/shifter/shift bracket/******ECU!!!!!!******

a manual trans ecu will not work an auto trans, and vice versa. although someone will think that an auto trans ecu will have nothing to do, so it will be ok....i dunno...somethin will prolly go wrong...the ecu will freak out when it doesn't notice an automatic transmission there.

also when you take your emission test if you even have too. there is going to be an error message. They type in the type of transmission. If you pull up in a car that is now a manual and use to be an auto. That will make a red flag go up.

no ECU.. so you will need that to.. if you have a 3 Speed Auto.. there is no need to change the ECU.. the 5 speed will work.. on the ecu you have.

hit an auto auction and get a wrecked one...

unless you have a 5spd corolla spare to do a swap with, its not worth your time/money - there is SOOO much shit. I'll eventually do mine (yes i have a spare) and when I do i'll post pics and a list of everything that moved. I think after seeing that you'll change your mind completely.... lol

the problem is that its really hard to find a used 5-speed corolla anywhere. I would like to find a used 2003 if not 2002 corolla LE with cruise.

If you have a 3 Speed Auto right now.. you wont need to swap the ECU.. because I have asked many people about it.. and all of them told me no need to swap the ECU since the computer doesn't control the 3 Speed.. same with the manual transmission.. computer doesn't control it.. you control it.

I will let it go for 150+ Shipping..

If you have another car to drive around.. you can easily get this done yourself.. in a few days. and save yourself lots of money

U need to swap the ecu regardless if its a 3 or 4spd auto now If we woulda have had the older rollas or tercels we would be straight unfortunately in our case we aint lucky. I know cause I already asked the techs and mechanics at my job but eh if u wanna still give it a shot by all means go for it....damn I saw the TC that shit is nice although it looks kinda eh in the inside kinda cheapy but thats IMO for 17gs I rather invert it into my car :) anyhow hopefully ill get more hrs and Ill do the swap and Ill try to get pics up on here if I do. Peace

I never said fuck the swap... I'm doing it... lol

Also getting a TC - like I said in IM though, i'm waiting 3-4 months for them to discover any interesting quirks that may lurk and work them out. :)

    This is correct...
You HAVE to swap the ECU since the management of the engine's ignition/fuel is different between the 5SPD/3SPD-AT/4SPD-AT - I've researched this EXTENSIVELY.
