Engine Question re: muffler for 2003 corolla S

Yo! I would go with the magnaflow. Thats what I got and I love it. Everyone always says how nice my car sounds. and it doesn't sound like that high pitched bullshit sound I keep hearing from civics. but then again if you wanted to decide to go direct bolt on I would go with the trd muffler!

Question re: muffler for 2003 corolla S

Hello gang, first time poster. I have recently purchased a 2003 corolla S and have a few questions.

1. When looking for a custom muffler, what are people using. I have been to a few different muffler shops and they always whine about the same things. The skirt in the rear. I tell them to lose their skirts and be creative, but they are not interested. The muffler I want is from magnaflow, but I am open to suggestions. Are guys flipping the tips over and pointing them down? Are guys cutting the kit? Any photos?

2. I have noticed when I open the gas cap, that there is no little silver shield inside the actual funnel into the gas cap. Most have this little flap, does your 2003 corolla s?

borla makes a bolt on too. i've read that the trd and borla ones are similar

The Corolla 'S' has ferring in the back and on the sides, this makes it tough when you considering what muffler to use, also when you plan to drop the car a little more.





Top one is regular 03 and the bottom is the S. That is the ferring I am talking about.

Do you remember which model you bought? I am looking for the throaty sound. Did you run a tip down below the ferring or leave it hidden the way it came stock.

I had a Flowmaster welded on and had the tip made to look stock on my 04 LE (pointed down). I did this so the noise would not be so loud in my car. The bumper is pretty big and traps a lot of noise otherwise.

You can get a dremmel and cut a small arc in your bumper to accomodate your tip but make sure there is enough clearance so the tip doesn't leave the "burnt" look on you bumper. I have seen a few S models like that and it looks nice.

While I have heard a lot of people say Flowmaster + Corolla = not good because Flowmaster sounds better on domestics, I disagree. Since I actually have that setup I know it sounds awesome. Not very loud but noticeable. Clean tone, better than the Magnaflow I heard on the back of a Matrix, and no buzz. At WOT it has a very nice growl and gets loud enough to put a smile on your face without attracting every cop around.

It is not a bolt on though which means you have to go to a good muffler shop and have it welded in place, but where I took mine they used all the stock hangers and did a very clean install. Add to the fact that I paid a whopping $120 for the whole deal and the muffler has a lifetime warranty on it and you do the math. You can still unbolt my setup and replace it with another bolt-on later and there is no difference in the size of the of the in pipe since all the bolt-ons run the same size as stock to the muffler.

If you opt for a catback system you are going to have them weld the piping in place anyway. So it is really up to what you are looking for. A N/A or S/C setup? I would go catback if you are planning an S/C otherwise don't bother because of all the low end torque you will loose.

But that's just IMO. I had a loud exhaust before and didn't want that again. I am VERY happy with my setup now.

he asked what a 0-60 on a corolla w/ the TRD supercharger/ headers/ and TRD exhaust would run............i said low 7's. That's for a 0-60 not 1/4 mile....... How is that an absurd answer?

I'm aware that there is a CE that runs low 14's in the 1/4 and probably has a low 6 sec 0-60. He's also got more than just headers and an axle back exhaust.

LOL, I can't belive I just read that. LOL. Anyhow what info do you guys know about the 04 TRD exaust? is it a desent noticable diffrence in the power of the the car? and does it really not void your warrentee?

there is no noticeable gain in performance. TRD claims it gains you about 3.2 hp. When i installed mine the engine felt slightly more responsive, but it's nothing to go crazy over. Overall though, it's my favorite muffler for the 03+ models. It sounds great, and yes it does not void your warranty. However, I'm pretty sure that any muffler that starts after the cat, can not void your warranty.

I'll definitely recommend TRD over anything else. it's not gonna get you a 0-60 in 6.2 secs, like the crack head above said, but it's a good mod.

Ha ha, LOL, yeah, then again 3.2 hp to the flywheel isn't a whole lot, that's like driving around with Two of your buddies and then kicking them out. But yeah I really just want to go straight TRD with my S. But I am still trying to find an intake.

Ok call me stupid, I know all of the new corolla's cept the XRS are the same, but Vpower.net said that the TRD intake didn't fit the S's for some reason.

What is it that you can run with a 5spd-S/C-Headers-Trd Exhaust-?

Oh, ok I was wondering about the fitment issues, I would rather have TRD, and HKS stuff on my car, TRD acctually does make some seriously good stuff, and HKS because well I have never been dissapointed by them.

I think not! There is one out here with CAI, S/C at 10lbs. and headers with cat back and he running 6.0 0-60 and very low 14's, a few high 13's on the 1/4 mile. Very quick. Low to mids 7 is what a 1zzfe s/c is doing on a matrix. Considering the corolla wieghs less, its expexted that it runs 6.5 - 7.0 with just an add on s/c. (on the 5 speed that is)

i, in fact, didn't see that it was 0-60. my mistake.

well first off i was wrong got confused w/ bzzsan's car and blk03corolla's........bzzsan's CE runs 14.845 in the 1/4 w/ the TRD S/C, CAI and Borla Muffler.

As far as a low 14 high 13 1/4 it has not been done yet. bzzsan is the only one who has been to the track. It is expected that Blk03Corolla will run a low 14 or high 13 in his S. His mods include....TRD S/C, TRD CAI, Unichip, 9 PSI Pulley, Borla Exhaust, JP Header and Midpipe, and Water injection. So if infact someone is running that time already.......who is it....any links?
