Are you sure it is not the steering lock-out that is preventing it from turning??

i'll try it but i've been driving the car for like 4 years now and never experience a 'lock' on my ignition that made me have to turn the wheel. i'll try though

nope, i know what youre talkin about, it happenned to me *ONE* time, i turned the wheel really far to the left when it was parked and it locked in place, and then the key wouldn't turn. i had to pull the wheel a little further to the left and then the key would turn. this isnt the case here, my steering wheel is fully upright and isnt locked in place, my key just wont turn

If you have auto trans you might try jiggling the shifter back and forth as the locking mechanism is tied to both, hope that works for ya!

none of my keys have ever broken. the past few weeks or so it's taken me a couple tries to get the key to turn. i figured it was just the key wearing out, cause i would put my original in and it would turn smoothly with no fighting. so today i was actually going out to go to the hardware place to get a new key made, and neither of the keys will work. like i said not even my original from Toyota. argh

My friend said that you can break the ignition easily if you have too many things on your keychain. The excess weight swinging around eventually puts too much strain on the ignition and breaks it.

My wheel always locks up when I turn it in park. Try and press in the brake pedal while turning the key in the ignition. I have a 97 Prizm, so I assume its the same on the rolla. This is what always does it for me.

    EDIT: Depress it far.

try putting some liquid graphite in the keyhole.. or white lightning.. go to a key shop they'll know what white lightning is.. that should loosen it up nicely.

if worse comes to worse, jam a screw driver in there and go ahead and bust it open at least then you can drive hehe..

the tumbler might have gotten screwed up.... or one of the inner "bearing" might have popped out of place making your key useless..... i would say call a locksmith

That has happened to me beofre. Look at your key and if you can see if the key is severly worn the tumblers inside the ignition won't turn. Dont't take it to a hardware store either go to a dealer a little more but they are cut by key code. Good Luck

i got a friend to come over and look at it and he got it to turn, but it appears that its loose and so i have to pull up on it a little and then turn. so it looks like it will end up needing work soon anyway

what happened there is that your ignition for your key is broken. the Tumbler which is called that make the key work is being retarded. Yes you can repair it by shaving some of the tumblers or just go to toyota and get a new ignition tumbler.

4 keys and a remote shouldn't be too heavy. I dunno. Lately, I've been keeping the key by itself on a lanyard to prevent having my ignition damaged.

early toyotas have cheap-ass keys that are thin and they break easily. the keys they have now are much thicker and wider.
