the 98-99 have no engine cover....just the valve cover that is the aluminum head.....the 00+ (the ones w/ vvti) have the engine cover that is plastic that goes over their ugly valve cover (aluminum head). correct me if i'm wrong...but this is IMO.

i think the reason the plastic cover there is to cover the D/I coils so no dirt get in or on them :)

w1ngzer0 is right......the plastic pieces that COVER car ENGINES ..those are engine covers. Valve covers COVER the VALVES and are required to make the car run. Everyone just calls them valve covers, it's one of my valve pet peaves. That and the fact people don't understand that when you get bigger rims you just get a smaller tire to equal the same total wheel size. :)

You don't NEED valve covers for the car to run... but it keeps your oil from going all over the place.

Had to run my 2T-C without the valve cover so I could adjust the valve train after changing the head gasket. Kindof a mess :)

Other than that, yes-- the plastic thing on top is just an an engine cover, which hides the valve cover from view. And, yes-- when getting larger diameter rims, get a lower profile tire to keep the outside diameter of the whole assembly the same. :)

yeah..that was off topic...I was just saying it was my other pet peave on this board.....those two things.....lol Every one always ask "can I fit an 18" rim with 2" drop?" it's like AHHHHH! the rim has nothing to do with it!!!!!...as long as you get the right tire. And then Everyone selling carbon fiber "valve covers".....geez. OK I'm done being off topic!
