Sorry guys, didn't mean to start an argument. Guess I never payed attention to the engine bay on the newer Rolla's...they look much cleaner than mine....seems like a lot less clutter. Anyway, I'm just doing a lot of thinking and planning. On the first of the month I'm moving to a new apartment where I'll actually have a garage, so I'm going to start doing some modding. Right now my car's stock other than the broken window and recently stolen stereo and center console trim...grr...damn haters...Pics in my sig for anyone who might care.

Edit: Oh, and the black trunk which replaced the dented one a few months back. (The rest of the car is white...My car looks pathetic)

I think it was 98 in which VVT-i appeared in Corollas.

    newb question...

Heh...I know this makes me sound like a major newbsicle, but I have a question about my Rolla...My valve cover says "16-valve EFI"...that is the same as the "VVT-i", correct? And, if so, where might I obtain a valve cover that states that inexpensively? Thanks, sorry I'm such a tard :)

No, its not the same thing , if you have VVTI it would say so on the cover, also VVTI was not introduced until 99 I think.

it was...98 it premiered in the corolla and Prizm..

and here's a question..why, pyro dude, would you want to lie about what's under the hood? that's like a kid around here with an SOHC Integra with a DOHC banner on the car...it's tacky...

no, they don't make them for your car...sorry.

nope...in 98-99 there was no vvti....this when the new 1zzfe appeared on the corolla. in 2000 vvti appeared in the corolla. 98-99 are non vvti and 2000+ have vvti.

umm..not according to hayne's manuel-it says "The VVT system was introduced on all 2000 and later Corolla and Prizm models. The differences b/t the 98 and 99 1.8L engine and the 2000 and later models is strictly in the VVT system components and operation of the valve train." phew!... maybe there is a pre-00 VVT model? or maybe-they just had the valve cover to make it look cool! ANYWAY...i want to get one too to fit my 96 4afe...they look so bad ass..i sound like a ricer now!

don't know about that. as far as i know it was a VVTi motor in a 98.

there IS that odd possibility that someone swapped it in, too.

    regardless...i stand corrected.

I think it was 00. Anyway trying to say a 94 Corolla has VVTI is pointless. They would probably make fun of you for saying that.

00 was first yr for vvt-i in the corolla. example? why of course lol
here's the engine in my 99:

hard to see, but it says "16 Valve EFI" on the valve cover. Non-vvti engine. Also notice it has individual spark plug wires running to the DIS box. This is not the case with vvt-i engines, as they have one individual coil per spark plug, and therefore no plug wires.

here's the engine in my 03 (vvt-i equipped)

says "VVT-i 16 Valve " right on the engine cover. Note this is not the valve cover, just a plastic engine cover. The valve cover is underneath and says nothing on it.

then it's not a 99 or he's got a newer engine in it or he just put a 2000+ engine cover on it. the 2000 corolla is IDENTICAL to the 98-99 rolla, EXCEPT the engine on the 2k has vvti - u cant tell from the outside. 01 was when they changed the body style, so you're probably thinkin it's a 99 since it's not the 01-02 body style.

falnfenix - wasn't tryin to correct you, just tryin to help educate on the way to tell the difference. figured pictures would be useful to do that, and since i've owned both models, ive got both pics lol
