    question about strut mounts

What is the purpose of strut mounts and how do I know if they need to be replaced? I heard some rattling in the front right hand side of the car and was thinking it was from the mounts.

pull out the haynes manual and torque all the suspension nuts and bolts to the tq specs. then go for a test drive see if that helps

    yeah what he said...

also when ya got to tighten them - if it rattles like something is broke - the obvious has occured... - its also possible that something (like the top part that you torque down) in your strut itself is broken - in that case a new strut would fix it as well...

What was the mileage that you had to replace struts on your 98 ??

Is your water pump leaking ?? What mileage ??? I would have to go with an OEM on that part.

actually it was stupid on my part :( :( . I didnt really need to get new struts. I originally bought my car used with 53,000 miles and had trd struts and springs. When I had the springs and struts replaced I threw away my oem struts and springs. Last year I decided I didnt like the ride of the trd struts and springs so I had to get oem struts and springs for my car (found used oem springs and new oem struts for my car). Luckily I got a good deal on the struts and springs. I still have my original strut mounts though. The reason why I am thinking I need new strut mounts is because the car leans a lot around the corners and the ride is rough even though I have the stock suspension parts. As for the water pump though it doesnt really appear that I need a new one although it seems like there is a slight whining sound when the car is idling. I was thinking of replacing my water pump anyway. It wont really hurt anything.

Thanks for the reply! I have a rattle in right front. 2000 Corolla 85k. I would like to have bolts checked to see if that solves problem. ( I think it is the struts or mounts) When I get the work done I think I will replace struts (with OEM) and the strut mounts as well. CW

i also think the front right strut on my car is fuct oem strut w/ a 2" drop
i think it may be the plate that is on the top of the strut assembly the bushing or whatever.

hey craigw what is this rattling noise that you are hearing? Is is like my problem where it is a rattling noise heard from inside the car from the front passenger side.
In my case it sounds like as if something is loose from inside the door or inside around where the glovebox is. I didnt find anything loose inside the door or around the glovebox so I am suspecting it is the strut mounts.

It is mostly on rough roads and bricks (not every-one) kind-of a knock sound. I read somewhere that the passenger side is always the first to go, and that makes sense. No leaks. I would imagine 85k is about the life but cant be sure though. I also decided to go ahead and replace the strut mounts at the same time. as the struts will probably go with OEM parts. CW
