How important are hoods pins on CF hoods?

Are they REALLY necessary? I've seen cars without them and they seemed to be fine, but some place claim the hood pins are used to hold down the CF hood to prevent it from flying off (or something of that sort). But really, is it all right to have a CF hood without those pins?

On most carbon fiber hoods hood pins are needed to safely secure it. Some hoods have the fiberglass backing that are weak and flimsy that needs the pins to keep them secure. Brands like VIS need hood pins on most of their hoods cause even though its a reputable company, its not that stable on some cars like the corolla and acura integras at high speeds. Basically hood pins are only functional on CF and fiberglass hoods. On metal hoods, they're just there for show.

Yeah, if I were you, I would just do it just for safety. Also, they might help the hood fit a little better. When I had a CF hood on my 3G Eclipse, the sides were up a little. I put the pins on the sides and it sucked it down to fit perfectly.

The VIS hoods need it even though they come with a latch? I always thought that you only needed them 'cause most CF hoods don't come with a latch.

That's what I thought too...but you know, if it's for safety, why not. At best, my excuse for not getting some is because I don't want to mess with drilling :p

Ya, some hoods like VIS do come with a latch, but sometimes on highway speeds the hood tends to flex and vibrate. The entire time my friend drove on the highway with his VIS CF hood for his integra, he was always afraid it would fly off cause it wasn't that sturdy. Like I said its more on safety for CF hoods and fiberglass hoods and just for looks on stock metal hoods.

yup, one guy i went to high school with was restoring a gmc jimmy for a track setup, well he had a ram air fiberglassed hood and it flew back into his windshield, in the process, it snapped the bolts off that held the hinges, which made the hood smash into his windshield......he took pictures of it and brang it to school and it was pretty crazy cuz the whole windshield was caved in and the front portion of the roof of the car was caved in as well.....

I think it depends on the quality of the hood. On mine the pins are needed to get the hood to sit right, I wish I didn't have to install them. Out of what I've seen the vis hoods do not need pins.
