Engine tilted mufflers?

tilted mufflers?

yeah, i seen these alot. but why do they tilt their mufflers? to the side?
what is that give the car more of a JDM look? im thinkin of doin it to mine. but dunno how it will look. i know it looks awsome on skylines and supras. but a corolla? damn.. :sad: so what you think?

i'm not a fan...i think it looks kindof tacky.

i had no choice.... (it looks better when the car isn't tilted backwards like it is in this pic)... but i'm starting to like it.... especially since i was "racing" a friend, his window was down and he literally "tasted" my exhaust....heh

They do that simply because there's one less bend in the exhaust and the gas can exit quicker/easier. It looks cool too, so I'm sure that was a part of the idea as well. HKS or some company explains about it on their website.

"cool" is in the eye of the beholder here

it looks good on cars/trucks that are dual exhaust...

i think its for performance reasons also, i see this alot on turbo cars more than anything else

i think it looks good on certain cars...i'm not sure how great it would look on a corolla...for sure i would have to say that a tilted exhaust would not look as great on 9th gen corollas. i just think that an exhaust tips on 9th gen corollas looks good...but thats just me...

im gona be doing my exhaust pretty, soon heck last time i went there was an rx7 with the muffler like that, ill ask em why that is........

and have you guys seen the mufflers that are kinda slanted upwards? is that for the same reason with the pipe bends and what not

yeah, pretty much everyone saids "cool" lol. just a trend.
im thinkin of doing it, when i get my Apexi N1 or a similar type of muffler.

try to run this under the diff and still tuck it nice and neatly in there..... you have to give a little to go faster

mine is also mounted like that, an N1 muffler aimed straight looks like complete ass.... and id have more bends than i needed (cost and "performance")

but how does the pipe bend down like that?

looks like its bent up to me.... try turning your monitor 180degrees either way

its pointing to the TOP of the car..... that would be UPWARDS and not down

teh muffler is slanted down, the pipe is point up.

My dad's '91 BMW 318 has the stock exhaust at that angle...it's just how it is.

I've heard it's a Euro thing...I've heard that Supra guys started it and everyone copied it.

I think it looks good on a Supra TT...but otherwise I don't like it.

I fail to see how bending it at that angle reduces the bends in the pipe...and any possible decrease in bends would provide too little HP to measure.

i think it only looks good when they have the tip of the exhaust coming out where the cutout in the bumper for exhaust is, i've seen far too many ricemobiles with an angled exhaust that is not lined up, or even better, on the opposite side of the cutout in the bumper

one less bend so you gain more power is a ricers excuse!!

How if you have it tilted because thats how it fits then cool but if you tilt it to be cool that is trully gay in my eyes.... That extra bend you put in wont effect flow enough to hurt you... what do I mean the theoretical loss in a 90 degree turn is less then 1%... now you extra angle is liek 20 degrees... so about .2% flow loss.... a catback system gains you a few ponies maybe 10 max.... now .2% of 10 is .02 hp if you gained 10 hp with the catback...

Its a fad peopel do that bugs me to hell... I think it looks tacky but if you like it then whatever!! Now if you had to fit it that way then cool... at least your not following a crowd of people going aww man that last bend in your exhaust makes you lose 300 hp!

On some cars I think they look good. With a car like a corolla without a body kit or something to make it look agressive won't look good with an extremely slanted muffler. On cars like on this MR2 it looks great. Then again its muffler is made this way.

I'm soooo tired of this argument... Nobody said it made more power. People buy wheels because they're "cool" and they look good, so does that mean people shouldn't buy wheels either?

Let people do what they want. It's how the import scene evolves. If someone hadn't decided to be different and try the JDM style instead of bling, which was popular in the mid 90's, we wouldn't be where we are today.

Im not a big fan of the tilted mufflers. All depends on the car really.

Allright to set things straight tilted mufflers are the way they do it in Japan ! come on where else would they come up with something like that? i personaly love the way it looks but yes on the corolla it doesnt look well unless u have a body kit on it

the correct term is "angled"

a less restrictive exhaust would by definition make more power. smooth out the exhaust by having less bends and straighter bends.

i can definately say it makes an easier path to exit..... there is still some combustion that travels through your exhaust.... and in my case, sometimes out the tailpipe

anyone done this on their Rolla before? the newer models.
