what you guys think of the solara

Hello. I currently own a corolla and planning to upgrade to another car. I was looking around and the 2000 Toyota Solara caught my attention. I was wondering what you guys think about this car and what I should be looking out for when I go for a test drive. Anyone know how the fuel consumption is? Thanks

If you're lookin for performance the Solara wouldn't be a good choice man... but if you're gonna put some dubz and shit on that then go ahead those cars look so damn nice when it comes to looks.... but performance they're shiatta

They're not as slow as you might think...

I've heard of them give a Celica GTS with an average driver a run for his money. And that was without the supercharger.

The one thing I don't like about it is weight...around 3400 pounds...so keep an eye how it feels around the corners.

I don't know what you're looking for in a car, I could help you more if you gave us a description.

if you've got the money, the v6 and trd supercharger can make up to 500hp heavily modded.
people are starting to drop that into mr2's instead of the 3sgte

Solaras arent that bad. If you can, get the limited TRD edition. That sh!t is tight. Comes with a TRD body kit, TRD suspension, TRD rims, lots of stuffs. Put a supercharger in it and it will be rocking the street.

Lol. It does look alike. Never put these two cars together before.

Great work for finding that TRD solara pic, turbo4age. That's what I was talking about. That car would look bad@ss if it's black cuz it has the white TRD rims already.

Do you guys know did Toyota make TRD Solara for the 02-03 model?? Cuz the headlights and taillights look better in that year.

They're quick but come on, running with a Celica GTS? I used to have a GTS so I feel like I need to stick up for her.

Go for it, but only the 6. Buildable, good looks and comfort. What more could you ask for?

Thanks for everyone's suggestions and opinion. The one that I am looking at is currently a V6. The only thing that I'm concern about is how well the gas consumption on the car is. Insurance on this car also isn't cheap either. CAD$2200/yr. :(

I own a Celica GT and spend a lot of time on Celica forums, so I stick up for the car too ;)

If the GTS driver can't land lift or is an average or sub-par driver, then the Solara stands a very good chance.

The only reason Solaras doesn't regularly compete with a GTS is because of weight and the performance at 6000+ RPMs (with a driver who knows how to use it).

A GT doesn't stand much of a chance I'm afraid...:(

The rare ones with the V6 and a 5 Speed would rock to have with the TRD supercharger... shitty to hear about insurance, its not that bad though, well, considering what I would have to pay for a 2001 CE (almost 4 grand a year)...

True, the last Solara looks much better than the current. If I didnt get my XRS, I may get one too. Of course it's gonna be the limited TRD one, V6 is a must, so does the 5-speed tranny. Throw in a TRD supercharger and this car is done. I like it so much because its just much better than the accord. V6 accord with manual transmission was intrduced the current gen. An V6 Accord before that only has AT. So I think a MT V6 S/Ced Solara can eat pretty much anything alive on the street. (correct me if i am wrong).

A V6 Accord with the six speed manual might give it a run for its money..

There are fast cars all over here, so I wouldn't go so far as to say 'eat pretty much anything alive' -- I see Mustang Cobras, Porsche Boxters, the occasional 911..a Ferarri the other day..etc.. :)

Come on now, you are comparing a Solara with all those expensive sport cars.

What I meant was it can win pretty much most of the regular cars. You know, something like camrys, accords, crown vic, tl, something like that. Cuz Im pretty sure a S/Ced MT V6 Solara can run a 0-06 less than 7.

So more along the lines of economy cars.. ;)

lol -- the 'anything' was way too broad for me..especially after seeing a 15-passenger van run a 12 second quarter mile at the local track. :p

I'll break it down like this:

Handling wise, the 7th gen Celica would pwn the Solara. 'nuff said.

Engine wise, the 1MZ-FE has more power potential than the 2ZZ-GE . I still have yet to see a 2ZZ-GE making more than 400HP. Anyone is welcome to prove me wrong on this.

There's still a pretty small aftermarket for the 2ZZ right now, though that's changing. C2Power is working on a stage three turbo that should be up around 300HP. 400HP is realistic for a 2ZZ, if you're willing to build it to stand turbo plus a shot of nitrous.

Of course, any engine that's bigger than the 2ZZ and has more cylinders will probably have more potential...except maybe the one in my parent's minivan :p

If I wanted a six cylinder engine I could tune up to massive horsepower numbers, I'd get an IS300, not a Solara.

The amount of horsepower generated is dependant on how much torque you're making, so torque is kinda important. You should watch sometime how fast a supercharged V8 can get off the line ;)
