Toyota reveals 170 horsepower 2005 Corolla XRS

Toronto, Ontario - Toyota is introducing a new Corolla XRS model equipped with a version of the 1.8-litre, 4-cylinder DOHC engine and six-speed manual transmission shared by the Celica GT-S and Matrix XRS. The engine develops 170 horsepower and 127 lb/ft of torque. The engine features Toyota's intelligent Variable Valve Timing with Lift (VVTL-i). Only one transmission is available - a 6-speed manual. The Corolla XRS also features:

4-wheel disc brakes with ABS and EBD
    16 inch aluminum alloy wheels
    tire pressure monitoring system
    power moonroof with sunshade
power doorlocks with keyless entry; power windows with driver-side auto-down
    cruise control
air conditioning with clean air filter
    Optitron gauges
leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob
    silver interior accents
    unique, fabric sport seats
    illuminated entry
side skirts, rear spoiler with LED and coloured front grille
    front strut tower bar
The MSRP for the 2005 Corolla XRS is $24,185.
In other Corolla news, Toyota Canada announced pricing and upgraded content for its other 2005 Corolla sedans.

The volume-selling Corolla CE, like every 2005 Corolla, is updated with a remodelled grille, a more aggressive front bumper and lower valance combination, distinctive new tail lights and wheel covers. New seat material, and a vertical adjustment for the driver's seat add comfort and visibility.

Every 2005 Corolla receives additions to the standard equipment that include front passenger airbags with status indicator, an engine immobilizer for added security, UV glass protection, and a rear centre seat headrest. With this added equipment, a base 2005 Corolla CE with manual transmission carries a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $15,490 - eighty dollars more than the model it replaces.

In addition to the Corolla CE are the Corolla Sport, with an MSRP starting at $19,955, and the well-equipped Corolla LE, which starts at $21,600.

2005 Toyota Corolla: Exceptional Combination of Value and Performance
TORONTO, April 26 /CNW/ - Toyota Canada, Inc. (TCI) today announced
pricing and upgraded content for its 2005 lineup of best-selling, Canadian-
made Corolla compact sedans. Toyota's perennial sales leader, Corolla is known
for enhanced safety, convenience and comfort features, all for a modest price.
The volume-selling Corolla CE, like every 2005 Corolla, is updated with a
remodelled grille, a more aggressive front bumper and lower valance
combination, distinctive new tail lights and wheel covers. New seat material
enhances the welcoming environment, and a vertical adjustment for the driver's
seat adds to both comfort and visibility.
Every 2005 Corolla also receives important additions to the standard
equipment that include front passenger airbags with status indicator, an
engine immobilizer for added security, UV glass protection, and a rear centre
seat headrest. With this added equipment, a base 2005 Corolla CE with manual
transmission carries a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $15,490
    - just eighty dollars more than the model it replaces.
"Corolla surprises owners with how much value they can get for their
money - something that's especially important in today's extremely competitive
compact sedan segment," said Tony Wearing, Managing Director of Toyota Canada
Inc. "For 2005, Toyota is again raising buyers' expectations, starting with
the base model and adding value all the way through the new Corolla lineup."
For 2005, the compact Corolla is offered in four trim levels, each with a
versatile combination of functionality, comfort and performance. In addition

    Powerful New Driving Fun
The performance of the new Corolla XRS starts with its own version of the
punchy 1.8-litre, 4-cylinder DOHC engine and six-speed manual transmission
shared by the Celica GT-S and Matrix XRS. The engine develops 170 horsepower
and 127 lb/ft of torque. In addition to a significant improvement in mid-range
torque, engine power is increased at higher revs thanks to Toyota's
intelligent Variable Valve Timing with Lift (VVTL-i).
Only one transmission is fitted to this outstanding powertrain - an
    advanced 6-speed manual.
Corolla CE, LE and Sport, are powered by Toyota's 1ZZ-FE 1.8-litre,
4-cylinder engine. Also the engine of choice for the Matrix and the Celica GT
sports car, this 16-valve powerplant is equipped with multi-port electronic
fuel injection and Toyota's sophisticated Variable Valve Timing -intelligent
    (VVT-i). The 1ZZ-FE produces 130 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 125 lb/ft of
    torque at 4,200 rpm.
Designed for low maintenance and long service life, the ZZ engine family
is so efficient that it meets the stringent requirements for an Ultra Low
    Emission Vehicle (ULEV) rating.
On Corollas equipped with the 1ZZ-FE engine, a 5-speed manual overdrive
transmission is standard, and an advanced, electronically-controlled 4-speed
    automatic is optional.
Smooth ride and lively performance are further enhanced by a finely-tuned
suspension system that is both stable and responsive. MacPherson struts and a
front anti-roll bar, plus a twist-beam with anti-roll bar in the rear, combine
with linear control valves in the shock absorbers at all four corners to
increase ride comfort without sacrificing suspension control. Special toe-
control bushings stabilize handling by combining lateral cornering forces with
longitudinal braking forces to reduce toe-out under cornering and increase
overall stability. Corolla CE is fitted with P185/65R tires, while Corolla
Sport and LE ride on 195/65R15 tires.
On XRS Corollas, the increase in power is complemented by a sport-tuned
suspension that includes a front damper mounted between the shock towers to
improve ride quality and handling without increasing noise vibration and
harshness (NVH). The XRS suspension also features increased rate coil springs
and shocks on all four wheels to reduce roll and pitch. Adding to the road-
hugging performance, ride height has been lowered by 25 mm, and larger 16-inch
aluminum wheels are fitted with 195/55R16 Michelin performance summer tires.
The CE, LE and Sport Corollas have standard power-assisted brakes that
use front ventilated discs and rear drums, while the XRS version employs
4-wheel disc brakes. A 4-sensor Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) and Electronic
Brake Force Distribution (EBD) are standard on Corolla LE and XRS. ABS is
    optional on Corolla Sport.

Customization Adds Power, Performance and Pizzazz
Any new Corolla can be customized to the owner's specifications using the
Vehicle Configurator on TCI's web site (www.toyota.ca) or in a Toyota
dealership. An extensive menu of individually-priced options allows owners to
enhance their Corolla with features that add style, power, luxury and
    performance.
One of the most popular options with driving enthusiasts could be a
supercharger from Toyota Racing Development that can be fitted - or
retrofitted - to any Corolla with a 1ZZ-FE engine. The Roots-type supercharger
boosts maximum horsepower by up to 30 per cent, to 170 hp at 6,800 rpm. The
compact, integrated design includes a supplemental ECU (engine control unit)
that automatically makes the timing and ignition adjustments required for
optimum performance while meeting emissions requirements. The supplemental ECU
plugs directly into Corolla's existing wiring harness and is compatible with
    all diagnostic tools and procedures.

    Strong, Durable and Safe
High strength sheet metal maximizes body rigidity while minimizing body
weight. The front crush zone and side impact protection apply "tailored blank"
technology, which uses welded metal of varying thickness to better disperse
and manage impact energy. Side impact forces are dispersed throughout the body
via pillar reinforcements, side impact protection beams and floor cross
members. Side impact beams are mounted in each front and rear door along with
a head impact protection structure to further cushion occupants in a
    collision.
Advanced dual-stage driver and front passenger airbags are standard
equipment. Three-point seatbelts are standard for all occupants, and front
seatbelts have pre-tensioners and force limiters as well as height-adjustable
shoulder anchors. The back seat is equipped with ISO-FIX child restraint seat
anchors and child protection locks for added security...

i have to say though that lately, honda have way better deals than toyotas (in our area). toyota cars are cheap but they ding you in their stupid option packages. i hate that! to get a certain option, you gotta buy a package that have stuff you dont really need. this is why i advised my sister to buy the 2004 accord instead of camry. way better deal!

thats strange. in our area, rates are pretty much the same.

when my sister was shopping for a car... i looked around and the camry LE was going for C$25k with no abs, no alarm, no side airbags, no immobilizer. all options. at C$26k, the accord comes with all and i mean all. :D alarm, immobilizer, side a/b, abs, power this and that. the civics in our area are much better deals than corollas too in terms of what you get for your money.

i think the XRS will be a good seller coz of the equipment. at C$25k compared to the civic Si, the price is pretty good considering its got 170horses and the Si only have 127horses.

mazda 3 top of the line model goes for about C$25k also in our area with leather seats and 160 horses i think.

That's with the optional supercharger. The stock tC, the one you buy off the lot, doesn't have the supercharger as standard equipment.

Don't matter. The tC has 160HP but weighs 2900lbs. The XRS has 170HP but I bet the weight is around 2600lbs. Power-to-weight ratio.
