    I disagree. :p

Yeah I seriously hate how cities are all putting in red light cameras now. On top of that the washington DOT is testing the use of speed cameras in work zones. The amount of legislation in this country is getting ridiculous.

Other than the "revenue generator", why would you be against red light cameras and speed cameras in work zones?

I"m sure he feels the same way as me, but here's my philosophy: people see the yellow light and slam on their brakes. Same kind of reaction when you see a cop at the intersection. Seen plenty of accidents from that crap in Baton Rouge since they started the cameras.

yup, it's only about making more money and does cause accidents. I'm so busy checking the lights that it distracts you from the cars in front of you. Also the speed cameras you have to watch your speedo like crazy or do 5 under or you get a nice sized ticket. Perhaps a better solution in work zones would be to have those Speed Limit: Your speed: radar screens to get people to realize they need to slow down. More of a hint than going after your money every time.

It's gotten so bad here with yellow and even green light brake slam-rear end accidents, almost every local news station has done stories about it.

WHAT?!?! This makes absolutely no sense though!!!

Youre so busy checking the lights that it distracts you from the cars in front of you??!? How is this the red light camera's fault?!?! Lol. Maybe you should contact your local legislature and complain about red lights in general!

And you have to watch your speedo like crazy due to speed cameras?? What a crazy concept.....keeping your speed at the legal limit.

Really....cmon now. These are basic DRIVING 101 issues....if you cant keep an eye on your speed when youre driving, or if you cant stop at a red light when needed, you shouldnt be driving on the road. The above logic is super crazy!

You are complaining about not being able to stop at a stop light properly, but you want more huge flashing signs on the side of the road to distract you? Why would you need a big machine to clock you and tell you how fast youre going? Cant your eyes glancing down at the speedo in your car do that job pretty well?

Its not the red light cameras faults.....its the drivers fault for not paying attention, and not knowing how to drive.

e_andree added 2 Minutes and 15 Seconds later...

They see the yellow light and slam on their brakes......if its yellow, its time to stop.

This isnt Starman "Green Light Go.....Red Light Stop.....Yellow Light...GO really really fast"

normally you only have to glance up at the light once in a while. But, if you go through even a split second after it goes red, ticket. In addition to this I've seen lights reprogrammed to make the yellow shorter. Thereby creating more $$

Thats not how they work. If your car is behind the white line when the light turns red, you get a ticket. If the light is still yellow and you cross the white line, no ticket.

You really have to be blatantly running the red light to get a ticket. Those that are against these red light cameras are those that like to speed and run red lights.

And even then, each picture is manually reviewed and then decided on.

If anything needs to change about them, its that there is more education on them. And their locations are made public.

    fixed that for you.

eric and i are on the same page, again, as is typically the case.

i work in the construction industry as a heavy equipment operator, and i also have a class A commercial drivers license with an X endorsment. i am privy to some of the worst, most angry, irresponsible, self entitled, ignorant, lazy, and inconsiderate drivers on the road... especially living in las vegas. i have seen people hurt and killed by wreckless drivers through workzones. if it was up to me, the people who speed or drive wrecklessly through work zones (and also school zones) should be fined more heavily than 2x the norm as is the case here locally.

turbo4age added 2 Minutes and 16 Seconds later...

also, are you guys getting those crossing lights that count down now? here in vegas/henderson the little crossing lights for the crosswalk give a countdown to pedestrians, but i find it especially helpful for timing my reactions to a light possibly changing.

its still illegal here in nevada to issue a ticket from a redlight camera though...

The minute the light turns to red, the cameras here starts taking pics. That includes it changing to red after your car enters the intersection. We had a client who was being waved around an accident in an intersection by an officer....who got a camera ticket which prominently featured the officer waving her around the crash. That case was how we found out about the way the cameras work here. And yes, they city actually tried to make her pay it....ad then tried their damnedest to get court costs when they relented and dismissed it.

So, if you're cruising along, pass through the intersection on green and somehow end up stopped in the intersection when the light turns red(someone in front of you pulls a bonehead left turn maneuver, for instance), you get a ticket. And around here, "review" consists of them checking your cash you pay in with a counterfeit detector pen....unless you get an attorney.

Right now we've only got them in one of the suburban cities. I avoid the intersections that have them and try to avoid going to this city whenever possible.

About the only thing I could add to this debate...

...is the total lack of driver's understanding on when it is ok to drive thru a yellow light at the speed limit. I don't expect every driver to floor it when they see a yellow light to make it. But there is a point where it is NOT safe to slam on your brakes to stop for a yellow.

IE: Just after the truck was lifted, there was a little too much bias to the rear that I hadn't fixed yet. So a hard braking maneuver would cause my back end to lock up well before the front. A guy in a saturn in front of me, locks up his brakes to stop for a yellow light. He was easily only 30-40 feet from the crosswalk in this intersection.

That's about all I could add here, lol.

However, it's still better than running a red. That could be deadly. I'd rather hit someone in front of me in a straight collision than get in a T-bone collision. Airbags work best in front and rear. My LE model does happen to have side airbags, but I'm still don't that safe with them.

Well that's the thing, he could have continued along at the speed limit and me behind him could have stopped perfectly normal. Instead he locked them up, my back end locked up first as I was changing into an empty lane and I had a little drift going on. That's scary. (Yes, I immediately did fix my brake bias )

Don't run red lights, don't throttle up from 600 yards to get thru that yellow light. But for the love of god, if you are 5 car lengths from the light, don't lock 'em up to stop. That is plenty of safe time to get thru the intersection before the light turns red.

Ok, agreed. If you have time to go through the yellow light safely, do it so you don't forced the person behind you to slam on the brakes. I think I would be pissed too.
