    Backups

Well on Monday my computer crashed. no big deal, I just reinstalled everything. However, after I was done installing everything I needed yesterday night, it crashed on me again when I was removing a program I didn't need.

Each time it told me it was using the most recent backup and it would restart. How do I create those backups? I want to do one once everything is in place so that if it ever crashes, I can have a recent copy.

    Thanks!

    btw..I'm using Win 98SE.

Sounds like it is using registry backups - I'm pretty sure that only Windows ME and Windows XP Home/Pro use "restore points". The rest of them used automatically saved registry files.

To set one manually (also works for backuping the registry before making registry changes:(

Make a backup copy of the registry:
    - Click Start Menu botton
    - Click Run
    - Type "scanregw" (don't need the quotes)
    - Click OK

Should recieve a prompt to back up the registry - Click Yes
Should receive the "Backup complete" message - Click OK

This will create a Rb0x.cab file in the Windows\Sysbckup folder. Ther emight be as many as five other files in there already (where x is a number from 0 to 5). The oldest Rb0x.cab file is overwritten - when restoring the OS - the newest cab file is used.

Windows Registry Checker backs up these file:

    -System.dat
    -User.dat
    -System.ini
    -Win.ini
-Various registry configuration information (user information and preferences, protocol bindings, and program settings).

    Good Luck.

It is pretty simple - but that is only for backing up the registry. Which probably good enough for about 95% of the crashes on these Windows machines - since you can get a corrupted registry from a bad driver or funky program.

I personally do backups with Drive Image 9.0 (same as Norton Ghost 9.0 - Symantec took over PowerQuest) - can automatically does daily backups when I'm not on the machine or do a full image of the entire drive. Never lost a bit of data.

Drive image is great, but you need another drive to copy to. Backup is always essential to maintining your computer.

Retrospect is another piece of application that is great, and can do multiple network backups.
