*Timing Belt

Anyone here already got their timing belts replaced?
Are there symptoms when its time to have replace?
I got 90k miles on '93 DX.

depending on the vehicle the recommended replacement schedule is 60k to 90k. i just had to replace mine (again) at 130k because it hopped a tooth, but the original lasted to something like 120k.

I'm glad I never have to replace mine. I don't even have a timing belt, rather a timing chain.

90k on a 1993......wow..

A chain's recommended replacement interval is usually 100k. I check for slack and wear at 100k anyway(earlier if it starts to get loud) and if it's got it, a new chain goes on. The old double chain engines were a little sturdier than the singles that are on most cars now. Those usually didn't need replacing for the life of the engine.

Belts usually don't give warning when they are ready to go. The last belt engine I had was checked every 30k or so, replaced every 45k and we still had one break on it while riding down the expressway. Thankfully the old 4ac was non-interference.

replacing the chain is a big hassle huh?

Depends on the car really. We can knock out a 22r chain in about 3 hours in the driveway.

In 3 hours. That's pretty good.

See, folks assume that the reason their r series pickup with say, 200k miles is overheating and has gumbo in the coolant is that the headgasket has blown. They park the truck and leave it sitting. We approach them about buying it, take a look at it and have them name a price. (The highest one we've paid thus far was 500 bucks for an 88 X-tra cab long bed...in perfect shape) We drag it home, fix it, and sell it usually for 800-1000 bucks over what we paid for it. So you ask, what was wrong with it??


The timing chain stretched, wore the guides down and a hole into the coolant passages in the front cover and caused the mixing of water and oil. A oil/coolant flushing and roughly 100 bucks worth of parts later it's as good as new. We kept the 500 dollar one, but we've turned over every one thus far. High gas prices have got the blue collar tradesmen who must have a pickup truck wanting something that gets good mileage and is reliable. The 22r will run forever so long as you take care of it. New timing chain/timing set if it needs it, and sometimes a new cover combined with a good coolant and oil flushing brings it right back to life.

Makes for a nice side hustle. Plus we can keep the clean ones for a while then sell them when we find something nicer.


The biggest pita was the 3sgte MR2 turbo we did. Damn. There is literally a specific way to disassemble/reassemble for every engine service on that car. It was for someone we knew personally though. We won't do that car at the house for the avg. joe definitely. We did find out a broken belt won't fubar a 3sgte though. No bent valves on this one at all.

He was lucky then. Very lucky.

how much would it cost for it to be done by a mechanic? im guessing TONS since it takes that long..

I don't remember exactly what the hour count was on it, but I know that both of the big local dealers drop the engine from under the car to do it. I'll have to look it up this weekend.
