Next-Gen Prius to share corolla parts

Toyota's Prius is notable not just for its hybrid drivetrain, but for its unique body structure as well, aimed at strength with light weight for optimum fuel efficiency and safety.

The 2009 Prius won't be a standalone car in the Toyota lineup, however. It'll share many structural and suspension elements with the Auris, the car that replaces the Corolla in Europe and has recently launched in Japan as an upscale compact.

The current Prius is bigger and more capacious than the Corolla and will remain so because the Auris platform can be stretched in length and wheelbase, says development chief Hirofumi Yamamoto. Parts of the Auris's steel structure will be replaced with aluminum and plastic to maintain or improve fuel economy.

The third-generation Toyota Prius will feature a sophisticated three-link independent rear suspension, exceptional rigidity due to extensive use of high-strength steel, and high crash-safety scores.

It sounds good. Does anyone know what the projected mileage per gallon is? The rigid body would be great for handling, but power would become an issue. Blitz prototyped the current gen Prius in turbo form which actually increased MPG and power significantly to 200 hp and over 300 lb-ft of torque. Hopefully Blitz will take up the new Prius as another project.

forced induction and atkinson cycle AND electric motor are efficient

for some weird reason, the more boost, the more mpgs you get.... ofcourse it all comes down to if you REAAAAALLLY wanna go wild or just better than stock tuning

Well why not get as much power out of it as you can for speed as well as gas mileage? It seems reasonable to me.

bout time they started replacing steel with plastic and aluminum.. it's sad to think that even as efficient as the corolla is, it still weighs 2400lbs. Now take a lotus elise (who's frame is aluminum, yet uses toyota's engine and transmission), and it weighs only 1,600lbs. Basically the weight of a geo metro with a kick-ass engine. Top gear recently raced a lotus vs a mustang (three times the liters, twice the amount of cylinders), and the lotus ate it for breakfast.
