    Smoking in Public

New York and LA have done it and now as of Jan 1st 2008, Chicago will be smoke free in all restaurants and bars. What is your opinion? Do you support it or think government should not get involved.

you forgot Baltimore in 2008, as well.

frankly, i prefer going somewhere with friends, knowing i won't leave in pain. most of my friends enjoy going to bars, and i would probably like it a bit more if i wasn't dealing with cigarette smoke. so, sorry smokers, but i like it.

There are some clubs in DC that you can't smoke in and there are quite a few in MD. When you go into the clubs, they take away your lighters and/or matches.

I like the fact that they are smoke free. Places can seperate smoking and non-smoking areas but that doesn't stop smoke from traveling. If you're at a resturant and need a smoke, then go outside, its not that hard. I smoke when i drink with friends..and when I do smoke, I always go outside. its not like i have a choice but I don't complain.

I think its a great idea. Others shouldn't be exposed to 2nd hand smoke in a public area against their will. This makes it so that everyone can enjoy themselves without the fear of shortening their lifespan. Finally one good thing from the bureaucracy.

I believe it should be up to the individual establishments as to whether they allow smoking or not. If government wants to get involved, they should just make tobacco illegal. Then they'd have the authority to enforce a ban in a private establishment. If a bar owner wants to allow smoking, they should be allowed to make that choice. Patrons should realize that if they decide to enter the business they will be exposed to smoke, and if they don't want that they should spend their money elsewhere. (The shrinking role of personal responsibility in American culture fits in somewhere here too)

I think a nice "legalese" sign on the door of places that allow smoking should suffice. It'd line out that the business allows smoking inside and that you understand that if you decide to enter you'll be exposed to tobacco smoke. It'd also list the Surgeon General's take on second hand smoke dangers and leave the choice up to the customer as to whether they want to go inside.

in DC, the establishments currently have that option to ban smoking if they want to. And surprisingly, almost all clubs have no smoking signs now. The club I used to promote for had no smoking signs the last time i was there. not sure about resturants or small bars though.

Oh and NJ has the no smoking policy too. Although, if I lived in NJ and smoked, I'd quit a long time ago. cartons are going for 60.00 each. almost 7.00 a pack in some places.

January 1st of this year, Louisiana banned smoking from all restaurants and schools, and most workplaces volunteered to do so as well. I love it. When I waited tables a few years ago, there was nothing I hated more than to work the smoking section. I'm not a smoker (don't ever plan to be one , either), and I hate being subjected to it. JMHO.

Oklahoma has the same thing I think. I dare not go to the indian casino's. The smell of cigarette smoke will linger for days. It just makes a place that much less enjoyable.

Nathan's farts dont even smell THAT bad. Although he has dealt some that are terrible ... but whatever. As far as this whole issue goes ... I'm happy that there aren't any smokers in rest. and stuff like that. I used to smoke ... and I was supposed to have quit quit Jan 2006, but I didn't, not completely. But since November 2006, I haven't had a single one. In fact, I get sick from the smell now. It feels like all of the oxygen got taken away from me. And the smell that the people who smoke give off ... ugh. I am so happy I don't smell or taste like that anymore. And I am happy that I won't have wrinkles caused by it ... it will be caused by pollution and old age! :)

+1 (And ticket people for doing it too if it can affect other people in public.)

Ohio banned it as of the first of this year.
Now everyone comes to Kentucky from Cincinnati for their drinking.

I think it should be allowed inside of bars, since, y'know, drinking and smoking go hand in hand.

I wouldn't ban it outright- it's the only stress relief I get at my job. Step outside, smoke real quick, then take a deep breath and go back up.
Amazingly, my inability to get addicted to anything has meant that I still only smoke on bad days, even though I've been at this job for nearly a year (and thus doing the smoke-when-stressed thing for nearly a year). I've gone a couple weeks without even thinking of a cig before...
