For the first time in years, if not decades, a school in GA had its first integrated prom. meaning? First prom that black and whites partied together!!

For years, black parents held a prom for black kids...white parents did the same for white kids. If you read the article it shows how some people don't agree with the integrated prom!

If that was me, I'd hate to have seperate proms. That just kills the fun for the kids. I'm amazed that parents still act this way.

It's the South. There are still several schools, especially in Mississippi, that have self segregated proms and separate homecoming courts. Funny thing is the majority of students say they'd rather continue that way than change it. Their reasoning is that every other time during they year they self segregate at school functions and throughout the school day. A singe prom would be no different. No one gets in a bunch over it(locally anyway), and neither prom specifically excludes the other race.

Bear in mind that I'm not agreeing with the practice...just saying that it's not really a newsworthy event down here.

u serious? Considering I dont' live in the south, I wouldn't know. I guess if you're raised that way, then it would be okay to them. But damn..lol. What I'm wondering is, are whites welcomed to the black proms and what not and same goes for blacks at white events. I was never put into that type of situation, but I still say its crazy how this still happens.

There's no one at the doors of the separate proms that tells someone they can't go in because of their skin color. The kids just choose not to go to each other's prom. They don't socialize extensively anywhere else, the prom wouldn't be any different. It's not racism(though some on both sides are) it's more about your peergroup. I dunno how to explain it to people who haven't lived it before.

I can tell you that in the City schools here in Memphis, the social groups primarily break off by race. My school had clear divisions between black, white, hispanic and asian groups. Everyone got along and there were smaller social subgroups of different races (the football team, drama folks, choir folks, religious affiliations, etc.) together, but the largest groups were visibly segregated by race. I assume it was due to who you grew up with, where you lived(due to desegregation law in the 1960s the schools have kids bussed from all over the city to make it more diverse) and with whom you have commonalities and whatnot.

i just went to school here for a year and didnt see indepth if our school had those kind of "social groups" i had alot of white girl friends tho... for some reason whites like my brownish/tan color

Yup, its still this way in the south. Some parts of Oklahoma are still like that. Texas is pretty integrated. But as you go west of Texas, racial tensions go up.

LOL I'm actually a bit darker than the average Asian. haha I'm a tanned one. But I'd have to say if you take an average, we're beige. hahaha

Oh, and the correct analogy is Banana... hahaha
