    Affairs, ever had one?

Good topic to me that people are talking about on another site.

    Could you have one? Thoughts?

    and then...

the American Heritage Dictionary defines Affair as:

"A romantic and sexual relationship, sometimes one of brief duration, between two people who are not married to each other."

this is different than what i pictured an affair as... it changed my thinking towards it

heh dictionary definitions and practical application definitions can often vary when dealing with such matters.

im married and for at least the forseeable future (being realistic here) i dont see any need to seek a romantic, sexual, or any other sort of attatchment with anybody but the wife. im very happy with my relationship with my wife and as far as i know she is happy as well.

i DO think that the definition should add... "without consent" though. haha

22 and married is young, huh?
I had a girlfriend who wanted to marry and we dated for a couple years, but i didn't feel my maturity or her's was high enough, and we ended not too long ago. I love her very much still, and everything else I run into is an 'affair.' Yea, thats what everyone wants in college, though.

You've never been 'weak?' You've never had ONE affair!? Never a fling!? I think your car looks 8x better without that photochop of the roof.

what's so surprising about people not considering cheating on their spouses? you act like that's a difficult thing to consider...do you have problems with fidelity?

I always thought of an affair as the same as cheating. But in the dictionary's version, as a single man or woman, you can still have affairs. It was particularly interesting to me because once I thought about it, if i had to term what I had been experiencing with women, 'affair' seemed very appropriate.

see thats where you missed me. The dictionary thing doesn't say anything about having a significant other. Thats all. But I was referring to the other way too, I guess. It's difficult, in a way, to consider, because of the sheer number of people I know that have experienced these problems. I think people may dissociate themselves with it, on the outside, yet still struggle on the inside with it. Like you hear a lot of people say, "men are only as faithful as their options." The same could be said for women, in general. I was just considering the validity of this point, too.

Even with the poor definition you speak of...no, I havent. The first girl I ever had a relationship, kissed, and had a sexual relations with, is my fiance. ;) Been with her for 4 years now.

I speak of? Its the dictionary! Do you think that that's the right way to be, then, having only one relationship you're entire life and sticking with it no matter what? It would have a lot to do with how you picked your partner and what attributes they had, wouldn't you think, as to whether or not you should keep that relationship. But allowing for that exception opens a whole new arena of problems.

Do you really think the dictionary has that much baring on how people perceive certain words?
Also, are you seriously questioning MY relationship without knowing anything about it or me? My fiance has had other relationships, so that throws your little theory right out the window.

I always saw affairs towards the married side cause that's where I've only seen it happen but I guess the definition of it really varies according to the situation and the person you know.... I'm a pretty faithful guy when it comes to relationships and I wouldn't have the heart to do it no matter how tempting it would be.

if you're talking about a fling while unattached, then that's what every relationship that doesn't lead to marriage should be considered...and there is no negative conotation there...

the general accepted definition, however, is what i've already mentioned.

An affair has many different definitions....if one has just assumed that when they hear the word "affair" that it relates to cheating, of course thats the only thing they will think about.

When most refer to an affair, they are referring to cheating.

I'll see it as cheating because that's how it's been seen by my eyes before but then again I dk it could be maybe like people that aren't supposed to be seeing each other but they still are. Reasons why it could be called an affair as well perhaps because of religion or certain beliefs? I dk it does get tricky

affairs in marriage usually start when the wife or husband lose sexual interest most commonly on the womans side. another time it will happens is when two young people that have only dated 1 person get older and start wondering what else is out there.

some people think simple innocent online chatting in no flirtatious way...is considered cheating...like the majority said, an affair is such a broad term and everyone has their own opinion of what an affair is....

It might be a better question to ask "define affairs in your own terms and ask yourself if you've ever had one"..
