great car, practically a 4-door celica gt-s minus the suspension, the 2zz engine responds well to basic mods.
car and driver had a good review of it. performance wise, it's comparable to an Acura TSX in some respects.

i would definitely buy one if i came across a non-abused low-mileage example

i own a 05 xrs and I love it!!.. The engine handles high revs well and lift is pretty cool.....Now the only thing I dont know if it uses regular or premium gas... The toyota dealership told me regular is fine and well others say use premium only.....ANybody know the answer to this?

Use premium with the 2ZZ-GE unless you want to buy another engine within a couple of months, worth the extra couple of bucks at the pump. Unless there was a serious design change between the Corolla XRS and the Celica GT-S/Matrix XRS engines - it says in the owner's manual to use a minimum of 91 octane gasoline.

I did the same thing with the Matrix when I first got it. The little lady only pumped in regular gas for the first two or three months we had it - normally not a deal breaker, unless you like to hit lift. Even with the knock sensor - I got the plugs to be coated with little shiny bits of aluminum from the piston surface - just from the excessive detonation. Couldn't even hear the detonation - as the exhuast drowned out any telltale noises. Fortunantly, using a borescope - no significant amount of damage was done to the piston tops. But something I have to look into down the road.

Now, just pump in premium - only an extra few buck and hitting lift equals no worries. I know few people have driven the car without premium, just regular - but you really have to watch that right foot and keep the revs low. Not recommended - but you could run it with regular - just don't get mad if you blow a hole in the top of the piston.

    ^^
    :werd

definitely use premium fuel only... the 2ZZ-GE is a high-revving performance engine with high compression ratio (11.5:1), using regular in it is just asking for trouble in the long term.

hmm well i test drove one today on my lunch break at the dealership, by test drive i mean i stole the key from the key vault left my cell phone wallet, and car keys with the manager and came back an hour later...

well its simply amazing, specially hitting the lift i nearly came my pants. later i took a corolla-s out same year but i wasnt as impressed after driving the xrs, only problem i face now is the big meanies at the bank and a down payment(dont think my 98 is worth more than 2500 trade) anyway yeah kinda long post..but i am in love now and its affordable(within reason, i dont wanna spend 16k on a car with +100k miles)
