Get a tranny flush / service...see if that cures the problem.

My girlfriends Contour :)() was doing that, we flushed the fluid and added some slick 50 for automatic transmissions, and its not doing it as bad anymore (its still doing it though, but its a Ford, lol)

So definitely try flushing the fluid first, and possibly add some automatic transaxle conditioner, even if your tranny is dying, at least doing this could prolong the life until you can save up for another tranny...

Thats because your friend probably didnt do anything about it within those "couple of weeks"

And a JOLT is much different than just a NUDGE

I really don't know, but the fluid itself isn't expensive, and neither are the filters (a little bit more than oil filters), it might be a bit more labor though, I really don't think it should be over $60~70...

Or you could always try and do it yourself? :)

How come no one has mentioned bad tranny and engine mounts? Mine used to jerk as well, though not that bad, and it was bad mounts.

Well, the reason is probably because it hasn't happened to too many people. Never happened on my Corolla even with almost 300 000 miles on the original mounts, and my Civic did have a bad transmission mount, but there wasn't much play at all in the transmission movements, so its not something that I would think of as a possible cause.

If it is the mounts though, you'd feel it when accelerating hard or completely letting go of the gas also.

to check the mounts have someone power brake ur car and u watch the engine, if it seems to move alot, then its most likely the mounts

Changing the tranny fluid and filter isn't hard at all.

Just loosten the drain plug and let the fluid drain out(wish I had noticed there was a drain plug before loostening every bolt and letting it drip out the edges)
Then take all the bolts off(10mm)
Undo the bolts on the filter(3)
    Bolt in the new filter
Put the new gasket on the pan
Screw the pan bolts back in (remember to put the drain plug back ;) )
Fill with fluid(3 quarts of Mercon-Dextron III)
Start the car and bring it through the gears(with your foot on the break, don't go anywhere yet)
Go for a short drive, and recheck the fluid level.

    Should be 30-45 minutes tops.
