With gas prices climbing the way they are and new diesel technology on the way everyday to make them more "liveable" don't bet on that! I expect to see variable valve timing and 20-valve technology on diesels in the very near future to help with alleged power deficiencies. Most of us drive more for TORQUE than we do HORSEPOWER so a diesel really makes a lotta sense, cause this is their forte. VW's Euro spec 2.0 TDI makes some 138hp and 236lb-ft of torque! Now if Toyota could brave up and offer the Corolla in the US with the 2.2L D-4D turbo-diesel (148bhp, 229lb-ft of torque) and you could see some very interesting sales figures.
