paint repair

So, my car has lots of paint chips, scratches, and water spots from daily driving over the past several years.

To complicate matters, my car is Super White (040) colored. I have read elsewhere that this one of the few "single stage" paints used by Toyota (no clear coat). Anybody ever been able to polish one of these before? Did it work?

Why wouldn't you be able to polish it? How would it not work? If there's no clear coat, perhaps the paint is stronger. Or else, it's gonna be easier to polish, just don't polish as aggressively.

I always thought it was the clear coat that makes it easier to polish. Have you just thought about shelling out a few hundred bones to get it all redone and get another 10 plus years out of it?

well, I've heard that the white color will come off with the pads and you do have to be very careful. Repainting the entire car is out of the question at this point, can't afford it.

I thought that the point of polishing was to remove the paint.... usually the clear coat obviously, but either way, it should come off, and as long as you don't take it ALL off, it should be good, right?

It's fine to polish a single stage paint. You will get white on your paint if it's single stage. Clear coat will still be all over your pads if you polish a clear coat car too; you just don't see it because it's clear.

As long as you follow directions on how much polish to use, and when to stop polishing (after it gets "worked in" to the paint), you'll be completely fine. Single stage has a different kind of pop than clear coat cars when polished and sealed well.
