OK, here it goes again....question about alternators.

I have found a place that will build a custom alternator for ME!!!! They said they could also install a aftermarket sensor that will turn the alternator on fully at a lower RPM range. Both those components were quoted to me for 680 which included all parts, labor, and a full 1 year parts and labor warranty. WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?

I wanna do this mid january, would guys guys pay that or do yo uknow someone else. By the way I went with the ebay one and they sucked ass!!!!

700 bucks for your battery not to die is a F-in rip off.

How about some regular battery maintenence?

What sound system are you pushing? I had my Corolla for 7 years and only had one battery go bad. And batterys go bad anyways.

And a group buy wont do anything......no one will get in on it, because its a pointless and overpriced mod

The only thing that I don't understand is the sensor to fully turn on the alternator at lower RPMs. Turn on what? Switch to a different alternator? Some type of geared transmission inside?

That being said - a one off alternator for $700 is about right - not cheap to make one that puts out the juice at all RPM ranges. Costwise - you can either get a heavier alternator or gang-up a bunch of batteries in parallel or a combination of both.

Might be cheaper to get a slightly beefed up alternator coupled with some sealed SVR brand Car Audio batteries or similar (dry cell, deep cycle, fast recharge, high current) setup in parallel. Cost should come under what was quoted for your one-off alternator and you get easier parts availability (ie. run to a store and buy another unit) if that fancy custom alternator takes a $hit on you.

I read somewhere where people used marine switches (boats have two batteries) and only switched it to both batteries when they had their sound system running. Research it, Im sure you'll find out something.

italiancorolla, i think what you need is a high-output alternator coz our stock alternator is only 80 amps. You need a higher one like 150-200 amps. But you need to calculate first how much load your putting into your car, so that you would know the exact amperage you need for your alternator and give it a little extra for safety.

I also plan to get a high-output alternator but too expensive to have it custom-made. I got a quote for $1800 canadian.

    :p :p

wow dude, I was quoted 530 out the door, they would need my car for a day and even make brackets to bolt to my stock location so that if I went back to stock I could.

I have a marine battery switch already :):p
