    DIY: Swapping the center console

Summary: This DIY swaps your center console from a 98-02 Corolla. If you have a base model without the console lid, this is a worthy mod for the lid cover, armrest, and sunglass holder. Alternatively, you can swap from a 01 -02 model for a taller armrest, and extra power outlet. Be sure to match your interior color when you do the swap. The one in the pictures is of a grey colored console box installed on a tan interior car. In my opinion, the colors are close enough but do try to match your interior for best results.

    Tools needed:
    12mm socket wrench
    socket wrench extension
    screwdriver
    [IMG]
    Time required: 15 minutes
    1) Uncover your console box and locate the two screws in the picture. You will need to used your socket wrench with an extension to reach into the screws. Use a 12mm socket to loosen the two screws.
    2) Now locate the screws in this picture and loosen them with your screwdriver. There are one screw on either side. You might want to roll your seats back to reach them easier.
    3) Pull your parking brake handle up. Now grab the end of the console box from the rear and lift over the parking brake handle. And undo the clips on the front near the transmission shifter area.
    4) Now you have halfway through. Just take off your stock console and do the opposite to swap your new one in.
    5) Pull your screws back and you are done! Enjoy your new armrest.

only 2001 and 2002 have them. What year is yours? Maybe they don't come on the base model. I'm not sure about that one.

So do you have the taller armrest lidbox like the other 01-02 Corolla or do you have one of the 98-00 lower ones like the one I brought? (trying to figure out if there was a taller lid box without a cig lighter version). LIke some of the 98-00 have a cloth lid with many designs.

that's correct CB: 01-02 automatic corollas come with a higher center console - i think it's because they figure you guys dont shift so no need for elbow room. and these taller center consoles have the extra outlet.

if you got the center console from a manual 01-02 it would have had the cover and still been lower than the automatic one.

    PLU,

would you be able to take a picture of the bottom of the center console so i can get the part number for it (it's etched on the bottom). I would like the part number for the console that has the holes for the lid cover.

Basically, i would like to know the part numbers for the console & lid (the set that's sitting on the passenger seat in the first picture) so that i can order them.

thanks bro. it would be greatly appreciated if you could do that.

I don't think there is an item number on the console. Next time I take it apart I'll check. Each item number is different for each interior color too. Regardless, it would be much cheaper to get one from ebay or a junkyard.

LOL. I sell grass and pot that's what I do, seriously. I'm the district merchandiser for Pennington Seed, a mostly grass seed and pottery company somehow with a Master of Science degree in computer science and engineering. Weird, eh?

hmmm, i'm going to revive this old thread...

i'm still interested in this DIY swap and i came upon a 01 LE auto corolla with the same interior colour as mine (tan) and i'm considering buying it from the local junkyard...

question is, will it be a DIRECT swap into my 98 corolla auto VE? (i.e. does the 01 with the taller armrest and extra power outlet have the same length and width dimensions as the console in the 98?) obviously the height is not the same b/c of the 'taller' armrest, lol :D

i'm curious as being said, the 01 is taller and the length dimension just seems to be a bit "different" than the 98 one...lol...maybe my eyes are playing tricks on me.

i'm just worried about it not connecting properly to the tabs and having the same length to extend past the front seats.

has anyone swapped a 01 console into a 98 before?

    thanks guys for your time.

All the holes for installation line up fine. The center console with the armrest is slightly shorter, and you'll notice the different color on the carpet because the carpet under the original console has never been touched. Its a direct replacement
