Its been a while since I was in HS, but has security really changed all that much? This is the third such event in the span of how many days? I remember after Columbine if you so much as sneezed a SWAT sniper would aim at you just to make sure your sneeze was legit. I just can't see how this continues to happen (with the exception of this Amish school, because well, I guess I can see why security on their behalf would be not thought of as a HUGE priority). Even college campuses have seen an upsurge of this sort of violence in the past month. What is going on?!

There have been 25 shooting incidents at schools since August 10th. 7 of them resulted in death

Theres only so much security you can impose.....lets say that all doors are locked, and you have to press the buzzer to get someone to come and let you in. As soon as somone opens the door, ya take them hostage.

All of the surrounding counties in MD have a Sheriffs Deputy stationed at every single high school. MOST of the counties have deputies at the middle and elementary schools as well. That can only do so much.

Its crazy how things like this are happening. Someone mentioned on the radio this morning, that no matter how safe you make a school, you can never prevent that one instance where something happens.

Yea we had a cop at our high school too but he was such a rent-a-cop that he pushed around his authority by yelling at people and thats it and he was a big motha (like fat big) but I think if it came down to it, he prolly wouldnt be able to stop anyone....its like those all those action movies like James Bond and stuff where there's always ONE inept guard on duty.

But like you said, there's only so much security to give. Not every door is locked and even if they were, no one would be able to supervise who came in and out....just like sneaking into the movies through the back door....plus when we had an intruder, our school would call for a certain code phrase to be said over the intercom and that would signal the school to go on lockdown where every teacher basically locked the doors, turned off the lights, and moved the students away from the doors and windows. I see flaws even in this. One, people arent stupid. If he walks by every classroom and notices every light is off at 11am on a Wednesday or something, of course there are gonna be people in there. Two, our doors throughout the school were wooden with and without windows or metal with windows. Even if the doors were locked, the wooden doors or even windows can easily be broken in and theres your access. I remember one kid in our high school was running late to class and he pushed in the window part of one of the doors and it broke, thats how fragile that glass is...And I even remember when our school policy allowed any of us to get checked out of school by anyone, even if it was not a family member...we could also check ourselves out of school if we were in 11-12 grade...but obviously that caused a stir with the city when some kid got in a fight after he checked himself outta school.

I do however like the plan my college is starting. They want to change all student ID cards to have megnetic strips instead of how we use to have barcodes. Then they want to change all the doors in campus to either steel or metal doors i dont remember, and the only way to gain access to the class is by sliding your card through unlocking the double or triple dead bolt locks on the door. This way, they eliminate taking attendence and having the wrong people in the wrong classes.

at my old high school..they had teachers sit in the hallway, especially by doors, to monitor who comes in and out and who roams the halls. Even with that, anyone can take control of the situation. 1 cop for a huge school won't work so they had two or three on hand. There have been many times where fights have broken out and only the cops were able to break it up cause they have the authority to use force...not the teachers (I assume cause they never got into it).

Eventually, kids started bringing guns and knives to school. One kid got stabbed in front of the main entrance and another was shot at. Since then, they brought in metal detectors. I believe those don't work 100% as well cause no matter what, they'll get weapons passed the detectors. It just makes it inconvenient for them not impossible.

15-20 years ago, shit like this would never happen. It was safe to walk home from school. It was assuring to know that your child would be safe in school, not having to worry about idiots coming in and shooting up the place. Like I said before, its crazy how times have changed. Instead of getting better, it just gets worse in a lot of places.

amen to that...dont ya'll remember when we were allowed to play outside, free to roam the streets all day until the street lights came on, then your parents would make their first attempt to come find you because they knew you were safe before then. I want those times back...now we cant even leave our kids alone on our own lawns anymore...

In 1997, my high school had 1 deputy on duty at all times, and a security force of 22....just goes to show what kinda school I went to, lol. And it wasnt one of the more dangerous schools in the area. Rich county though, so they could afford a large security force.

Lucky for us, our school didnt see much violence. As a matter of fact, my town that I live in was voted the safest city to live in Oklahoma two years in a row...it still leaves us just as susceptible to the same violence nonetheless cuz everything seems to happen in small towns where everyone thinks "it would never happen here"....
