    Car alarms

So what type of alarms do you live by? or would recommend? cheap? expensive? etc?

I've only had 3 alarm systems in my life. One was a generic brand that was on my first beater that my dad had installed. The second one was the toyota alarm for the rolla and then I had the CompuStar put on the tC.

I personally liked the CompuStar cause it went 1.25 miles for the signal, but of course that changes when buildings are in the way and what not. But that one cost me 550.00 installed.

Now my Camry is up for an alarm and I dont' want the one that Toyota offers. I want one that has a 2-way pager and/or buddy remote. I may go with CompuStar but the F'ed up thing about it is that only one shop in my area is authorized to install it. If I don't go to them then it will void my warrenty on the brain and remote. Viper seems popular but how well do those work?

Let me know ur thoughts. Oh and I'm not looking for a remote starter either cause that would involve me having to leave a key in a bypass module cause the key is chipped.

ya clifford is a real good brand.

i had my civic Si stolen dec 30, 2005, it sucked, they found it stripped, no rims, taillights, no engine B16  my english book, and all that crap, then i got the clifford system, and im pretty sure the same guy tried to take it again right behind my work for the second time, but he ran off cause i heard my alarm, and the pager was buzzin.

it really works, especially the pager system if your really scared bout your car, im about to do that soon.

I have a cheap one made by omega.. was like $45 at pepboys. has a starter kill etc, lasted 2 years now and it's starting to die. might just have to buy another to take its place for another 2 years.

I have a Clifford Matrix RSX 3.5... they overrated the range imo. But good alarm for $200, people ask about my pager remote all the time.

    [edit]
heh.. speaking of which I just noticed I forgot to arm the alarm on the screen of my remote. I just steped out from the comp lab and armed it from about 150yds away. But it wouldn't work while i'm indoors.

Ive got an Avital one which is same thing as Viper and python cus its all the same company. Remote start, alarm, and keyless with two way pager. Said 1 mile distance but I find that hard to believe unless your in an open field. I can start my car from all the way on the other side of school so its good for me. Also lets me know if my alarm goes off if some punk is trying to jack my radar detector and it has helped a few times already. Youd see my running like theres no tomorrow to my car right out of open hour lol. Of course not too good if it starts beepin while im in class. Cost me $300 installed at a local major retailer. hellipnioy might have heard of em. ABT...

i have an audiovoxx one i got at best buy for like 200...basically what it is is that normal car alarms are hooked to the battery...this is too but it also has a secondary battery that the bad man lol cant find and disconnect, so basically once you disconnect the main alarm cord for power...its still ringing and beeping and everything cuz of the pack-up battery

Whatever you get, see if it has an option for an inline battery should the main power source be disconnected. Also, along that same line, see if the inline battery can be hidden somewhere in the cabin and not under the hood.

I wish I could have that Megavolt alarm system like from Robocop. They get in, but they don't get out. Alive.

Yeah I had mine reprogrammed so that the alarm would run for 3 minutes and not the usual 30 sec. Its a good idea if you take your car to school and people try to steal your stuff.

lol sure does, get a reputable brand! FYI you can find a clifford matrix RSX 3.5 for $175 and RSX 30.5 for $250 (at least that's my cost). dealer cost is even less, if you know anybody in the car audio business they should be able to hook you up at those prices. If not check car audio forums. Installation on Japanese imports are super easy if you have even a little electronics knowledge. The only drawback is the unit wont be warrantied by DEI if you do a DIY install. Some shops might do it for 100-200. But from my experiences DEI alarms, they are pretty reliable.

Goes off at random hrs, remote works only like 70% of the time, took it the dealership 3 times so far, they had the installer come back and check everything and said it was ok. Kept on doing that stuff, took the car back, left it with for a week, they installed a new one and it still doing it. I have so many probs with the car its not funny.

sounds like the only way to fix it is to do a clean re-install. They probably just plug in a new brain module on the 2nd fix, the wiring may have shorted somewhere. I've seen that a lot of times when someone wants me to uninstall their old alarm systems.
