idiot tire inflation question

    idiot tire inflation question

    I recently bought a set of stock tc rims and tires and put them on my corolla. They look great but I definitely noticed the ride is a bit more harsh. When I bought them they were at about 45psi. They are now inflated to about 38 psi. The information on the tire confuses me. in one part is says max press 51psi. In another part it says never exceed 40psi at tire beads. What does that mean? What is a good tire pressure that maximises the grip and minimizes tread wear? :superconf Thanks.

    when your beading the tire onthe rim (sealing it) your not soupost to go above 40 PSI or you could blow the beads when they pop and send the tire flying towards your face at high rates of speed (I've seen it done) the max preasure for air in the tire is 51 PSI... I'd run it at about 38... stock corollas are 35 I think... its on your door sticker or in your glove box

    right.. but thats max preassure for the tire.. the recomended tire preasure is on the car... mine ar 50 PSI and I have them set at 35

    I have mine set at 33 because 35 felt a bit bumpy so I downgraded it just a bit.

    anywhere between ~33-40 should be good. Fool with it till you find out what you like best.

    ^Couldnt have said it better. Either way its only air. Not like its gonna cost you much more than 50 cents at the gas station, hell most places are free. Just mess around with it and make sure all wheels have same pressure. One of my front ones was way off maybe because the tire got up on curb. I could feel car pulling to the side.

    Air pressure rating on the side of the tire is, Max Load Pressure."

    It says 65 on the side of my BFGoodrich All-Terrain's. When they were put on, I was wondering why driving my truck felt like riding a lunch-tray down a rocky road...

    Most people feel that 36-38 is about right for just about every tire. It seems to give you the best tread-wear and ride comfort.

    I swear I thought I saw my tire say 35psi somewhere on there. Maybe it said ideal or something. Ill check it out when I head out for work.

    I run around 40-42 PSI on my cars - tires say max cold inflation is 50 PSI on one and 44PSI other the other.

    Varys quite a bit from person to person, tire to tire. It depends on what you want. I plump them up that high since a majority of my driving is highway, I can avoid the bad spots on the road (most of the time), and I'm trying to maximize fuel economy.

    Some tires respond well to high pressures - others will track wierd or ride funny with anything above what the car manufactuer suggested. Note that the tire pressure that is on the placard in the glovebox or on the door/door pillar is for most OEM style and size tires. Once you go aftermarket or pick a higher performance tire - the pressure should be adjusted accordingly.

    The right tire pressure is one that generated an even tire tread temperature over the entire face of the tire. Not everyone has the luxury to measure this temp - so best way for people running PLUS sized wheels or higher performance stock size is to pick a tire pressure between the max cold inflation to the OEM's recommendation in the car.

    I like to plump up the tires up with in 5 PSI of the max cold inflation and bleed them down to achieve the desired ride and handling. Just make sure that the tires have cooled to ambient temps, before you start messing with the air pressures and don't be shy if high air pressure. The tire will take a hella lot of air pressure before it blows up.

    inflate the rear to a higher pressure than the front. so like 35/40 on the street. this will reduce understeer and improve handling. in autocross tire pressures are very important and just 5psi can change the feel of the car. this applies to street cars too.

    you dont even need to do that. I bought one of those cheapo air pumps @ pepboys that plugs to the cig lighter. Modified it w/ battery clamps so I could hook it right to the battery (my Honda has no cig lighter) Anyway its much easier and more convenient than using the gas station ones.

    ^I have one from walmart. It takes forever. I just fill it up at Shell when I fill up gas. Its free so meh.

    Mine's pretty quick. I mean you're only usually adding or subtracting a few pounds of pressure. not adding 20lbs to each tire.

    Yeah, its only air, but that "air" can wear down your tires oddly, hinder your gas mileage, etc.

    When I said that, I meant to mess around with it until you find a setting that you like. Its not like it costs tons and tons of money to get more air and in most cases, doesnt even cost a cent lol.

    pardon me for reviving an old thread.

    i have been running underinflated for a while...bleh.

    for the 2001 corolla s with stock tires, it listed 30psi minimum (i think its minimum). thats front and rear.

    my 17s' max psi is 44. I mine set to 35 psi. Did a 90 deg skid turn at 45ish no problem :p
