    Explain Bit Torrents to me

Okay, so tell me if Im understanding this properly...you download the bit torrent program (whichever you choose), then you download the actual torrent onto your computer, and the program used the torrent to find a group of people with the actual file, and then the program downloads the file?

I want to start using torrents to download DMB shows....apparently DMB has a good network, using dreamingtree.org.

thats pretty much what it is...

and im guessing... seeders are the people with the file... and leechers are the ones downloading the file...

leechers are only people downloading the file who do not share themselfs, otherwise they are just classified as downloaders.

not necessarily true in the world of bit torrent. you're a leecher even if you're sharing the file if its not complete. only a complete file bumps you to the status of seeder because you are no longer pulling from the network, but contributing to it. if you are a seeder you have the ENTIRE file in your possession.

I have a general rule. I upload 1.25:1 what I download. Therefore no one can say I haven't given back to the swarm what I've taken from it.

thats up to you... but with torrents thats how you get in trouble... they can't get you in trouble for downloading because unless somebody comes over and looks at your files theycan't prove that you got the whole file (because you download from more than 1 person) but if your sharing they can say... he has it, hes shareing it, if you want do what I do... share something thats more than 40 years old, so its most likely out of copyright... :)

sounds like you got the idea. bittorrent requires you to send data to others when you are downloading and typically the faster you upload the faster you can download.

Get in trouble how? Because of filesharing?

Nah, Im going to be using them solely for DMB live performances, which is 100% legal because the band allows taping at shows....they encourage it, ala The Grateful Dead. There are people out there that have every single DMB live performance ever done on CD. (Roughly 1750 shows!)

Currently I have about 35 of their shows on CD, done through B+Ps. Seems that bit torrents are much easier and quicker!
