I was doing one of those get a free IPOD deals, and you had to sign up for some stuff to get it. Well, AOL was one of those things. I called 3 weeks later to cancel my account. I had no problem doing so. However, I got a bill a month later like it was never cancelled. I called to get the charges dropped. They were really nice about is actually. They noticed I had no activity and closed the account and dropped the bill.

    AOL still sucks however

I worked at the AOL Canada call center a few years back, hehe...

There is a certain protocol that we we're suppose to follow, which involved transferring the person to the *Cancellation* department, which was actually called the *Saves* department internally. All they did was try to convince people to not cancel their accounts, and offered them discounts and free usage, etc... This department was only open during regular business hours.

But, we we're allowed, at our discretion, to cancel accounts for people at any time. If the person was polite and it was outside of the *Cancellation* departments hours, i'd gladly cancel their account for them. But, if they we're a real prick to me, tough shit for them, no account cancelling for them at that time. I was always good to people that we're nice to me though, i'd credit them back for any payments based on the last time they used their account, or for the entire amount if they never used it, etc.

OMFG! If I was this guy I would be sueing AOL for hundreds of thousands of dollars right now. And with the right attourney how could you loose :D

XM Radio does the same bullshit. I called them up to cancel XM radio and they asked me like 10,000 questions and then made me offer after offer. I actually had them offering me like 6 months free if I sign up for 1 year and blah blah blah. I finally told the guy to cancel the account or I'm going to sue there ass and he did :D

...customer service sucks in general in this country from larger corporations. This is not a fact, it's my own personal opinion...I do apologize if you happen to work for a big company that has good customer service. :p

I remember way the hell back when I had AOL. Everytime I go to cancel they would give me another two months free. I didn't bitch about so I took the two months free. I kept it going for about 14 months and then I called again to cancel as usual. The guy said he cant give it to me for free anymore so I was like, man Ive been trying to cancel for 14 months, you should have just done it then. Then I got 6mbps broadband :p BTW only reason we kept AOL is because my dad is cheap even though he has the money.

Violation of end user agreement. If the only way I can cancel my account is to contact them on the phone and then they refuse to cancel my account then I beleive that is a form of extortion. With exception to contracted services in which case you may be liable for all fee's up until the end of the contract but AOL is month to month.

AOL Canada was available alot on 12 month contracts... those cancellation calls we're fun, hehe... easiest way to get out of the contract, claim that you are moving somewhere that AOL doesn't have a local phone number to dial-up to...

Yeah, but this guy wasnt refusing to cancel......he was just prying into why the guy was cancelling. Its their job to try to convince you to stay with them.....that may suck, but its the way they work.

Some are claiming this call is faked.
