Yeah, the R6 is not an awesome beginner bike. The gearing on that pic and it's power output of 129 horse is outrageous.

The best beginner bike of all, is the 250 ninja. If you've been riding dirt bikes for a while and feel fairly comofortable sitting on something with two wheels, the 650 V-Star cruiser is a great bike, along with stuff like F4i's, f3i's, YZF-600R's, etc.

Heh, I repeat...the R6 should not be purchased by anybody who hasn't riden a bike before. The R6 is the best wheelie bike for a 600...and that's saying alot to power wheelie a 600.

an r6 is not a beginner bike. i know i started on a kawi 250 ninja. thats a beginner bike. i use to ride with zx12r and hayabusa and superhawk, the 250 tawt me how to take corners because if i didnt they would have lost me way back. a big bike is not the first thing to start on. granted i then moved on to a 2002 zx6r, awesome bike, but a beginner should not have a bike that will do 160 easily. if you snap it wrong you will end up on your head........

an r6 is defenetly not a beginner bike, I mean you can get started on one but it'll take a while to get used to the power and gearing.

some of you might remember I bought a ninja 250 last year to get reacquainted to riding...In the 6 months that I had it (before buying the R6), I put on close to 5000 miles. I still miss wringing out that little bugger. Even the F4i I would not consider a beginner bike. It was after all the premier supersport of its class back then (before Honda introduced the RR). Same goes for the 600r before the introduction of the R6.
If not convinced that the R6 is not a good beginner bike...go to R6-forum.com and see how many threads there are about guys starting on an R6 and how many of them are already looking for parts...:)

lol... its hard for lots of begginers to understand 'the bike over powers u' and u cant just downshift throw on the throttle, and expect it to do what you want...

the breakin time is time for you to breakin ur self and see how the bike reacts, trust me I sold bikes the next day i see them in them back in the store in the parts section and i laugh.

tho u guys are right... but still i gettin either a R6 or 636.

my buddy bought an 05 636 the same time I got the 250...Last time we were in the twisties, I owned him on my R6..:). It's not about if you can start on an 600 SS, its about honing your skills on a smaller, lighter, forgivable bike. A confidence builder, if you will....

I've met very few people that actually started on a R6, there's a couple at my work. I would love an R6 for my first bike but well I could rock a F3i or an F4i hehehe :D

    it's an F3...
    it goes
    F1 (87-90)
    F2 (91-94)
    F3 (95-98)
    F4 (99-00)
    F4i (01-present)
In 2001, the F4i used fuel injection rather than carburetors. Hence the addition of the "i"....

Since I have about 5 years of dirt bike expierience, I think I am going to choose the 600r or the v star. I just found out today that my insurance does not classify the 600r as a sport bike so the insurance is the same for both bikes.

a dirt bike is alot different than a street bike. on a dirt bike to go left you turn left on a street bike to go left you turn RIGHT. counter steer. if you have never been on a street bike it is hard to under stand.

It's still set-up the exact same way at speeds...you just end up turning the handlebars more on a dirt-bike to alot lower speed turns.

50 mph on a dirt bike and 50 mph on a street bike, the same thing happens...you push the bars left, you drift right and vice versa.

Ryan, Just get the bike that you think you'd be more suited for. If you think your g/f is going to be less comfortable on the 600R, then go for the V-star. V-star is a comfortable bike, with plenty of power to cruise on.

not many people do a 50mph turn on a dirt bike so they dont feel that effect of counter steer, thats all im saying.. :)

    Another thing to remember...

Most of the time (For those of you who are may rip me on this, I said MOST.) it is not you that you have to worry about. It's every other joe-dumb-fuck on the road who doesn't see you. A good piece of advice, as soon as you get your bike, get a good exhaust for it.
    "Loud Pipes Save Lives."

Helmet. ALWAYS. When I first met my buddy Orlando, he had a '99 F4I...he didn't ride with his helmet. It took me a month and a half, and I finally got him to start wearing the damn thing again. As soon as he bought an 883 Sportster...he ditched the helmet...because, "helmet's on harley's are gay."

Bullshit...Helmet, Helmet, Helmet. If you don't wear your helmet...even going a block down the street, I'll smack you personally.

Other than that man...Shiny Side Up and Ride Free.

If you ride..you know what he's talking about. Soccer moms and unattentive drivers ARE out to get ya...
Harley mentality...I've no quarell with them but I would not ride with someone without proper gear....call me a Gear Nazi, but I never get on my bike without helmet, my leathers, gloves and boots...
    (btw...a 99 would be an F4...F4i's are 01 and up...just FYI)
    Right on....

    ^---

Damn, I like this guy more and more everytime he makes a post! :D

My mistake on the F4. ...Lol, I'm not a master of Honda's, Suzuki's or Kawasaki's.

As for the gear...I feel like a total dumb-shit when I do it...but 98% of the miles on my bike (almost 12,000) are highway commuter miles. When it's above about 90...I cannot wear my leather jacket. I would rather take my chance surfing my bike down the highway if I go down...than pass out from heat exhaustion and get run over by a semi.

Believe me, I feel like a full-on squid doing that...but shit...the vents in my jacket don't do squat at 0 mpg, sitting on a bike that's running 220 degrees, on black asphalt...at 90 in the shade. *whew*

    Hahaha...can you tell I love bikes...:D

As for leathers...I see where you're coming from. As for me, I think that sweat is easier to wipe off than road rash.
Btw, I'm not against people that don't wear leathers. Nor would I force my belief on to them. But atleast a suitable mesh jacket helps in most situations. For those hot days, I do wear textile with leather enforcement...better venting.

Don't worry about the helmet thing, my parents always harped on helmets, I NEVER ride without one. I don't even ride a bike without one. I agree with Andy about the wear it no matter what.

I am also getting a good jacket and pants that I can wear even in hot weather. The pants will only be when I want to wear shorts to work, otherwise it will be jeans.
