Had a message from the PD when I got back from work today

Something regarding a fulltime officer position...I don't really know anything else -- I'm assuming the position is now open, and hoping they haven't hired someone yet. They did call me, so that's a good sign..

I'll be calling them in the morning -- hopefully things will work out...prayers & well wishes are appreciated! :)

What parts of the process have you already take part in?

Initial application and multiple ridealongs. I was told (several months ago) that my background check was in progress. I have yet to take the written test, psych eval, PT test, physical exam, or sit before the citizens' board and/or LEO board. I have yet to touch the tip of the iceberg, but I'm hoping for the best. The process is running slowly now because the department had a hiring freeze due to budget constraints (small town needed to cut the budget, so unfortunately, they pulled money from the PD).

There are six patrol officers (also two sergeants, detective, chief & admin people), and they're looking to hire a seventh -- I've met all of them and rode with four. They all seem to be nice guys (& one gal). So..that's about it. :)

How does that department work in regards to recruiting? In MD, theyll contact everyone that has put in for the position when a position opens up, to come in and take the written. Larger departments there are over 500 applicants fighting for anywhere from 5 to 25 positiions in the academy. Everyone goes through the process together, and people get eliminated as the process occurs. If there are 50 people left at the end for 15 spots, they have to start eliminating people somehow. That just gets you into the academy.....and finishing the academy doesnt mean youre going to be hired (but in most cases, yes).

Enjoy the poly......dont hide anything! Have you filled out the 80+ page background book yet?

This department has been looking for a fulltime officer for over a year now. The application was 20+ pages, and that's all in..they allegedly ran my background check already (or are in the process). My neighborhood references are in, as well as my college transcript.

In NH, people are unable to attend the academy on their own; they have to be selected/sponsored by a law enforcement agency. If I pass all the tests and am selected, I will be given a conditional offer of employment. After the 12-week academy, I work ~6mo with a field training officer. It will be close to a year before I'm on my own.

I have nothing to hide in my background, so I should have nothing to worry about..just have to keep hitting the weights to make sure I can pass the physical test. :p

Yeah, pretty much how its done around here too. Just dont leave ANYTHING out in your polygraph investigation. Even if youve accidently ran into child porn on the internet or something, or stole something as a child......Ive taken 9 polygraphs, so if you have any questions, let me know!

They'll be asking direct questions, correct? I don't want to be asked to list anything, forget something and fail due to an unintentional omission..

Thats the way it works though. Theyll give you a 50+ page questionairre....it deals with EVERYTHING.....lying to authorities, intentionally breaking any laws, sexual crimes, theft over 50 bucks, your credit history, your education, your drinking habits, your past drug usage including knowing anyone that has ever done drugs, etc etc etc.
After you fill that out, youll sit down with the polygrapher and go over every single piece of information from that packet. Unintentional ommissions arent an excuse.

Then he'll hook ya up to the machine, and proceed with 5-10 questions:
    1. Other than what you have told me in regards to sexual crimes, is there anything you are witholding?
    2. Did you come here with the intention of witholding information?
    3. Have you ever lied to a person of authority?
    4. Other than what you have told me in regards to past theft, is there anything you are witholding?
    5. Is your name John?
    6. Other than what you have told me in regards to past drug usage, is there anything you are witholding?

    Etc etc etc.
There are control questions, irrelevant questions, and relevant questions. He'll ask the same set of questions 2-4 times in a row, with a few minutes break in between. There are three sensors across your chest/abdomen, and a sensor on your finger, along with a blood pressure machine on your arm.

The key to the polygraph is your physiological responses, which are uncontrollable. If you spike to 100 on "is your name John" (if that is the truth), and then you spike to 175 on the drug questions, and then you spike to 100 on all the other questions, it shows that there is deception (witholding information) about your past drug usage.

Ive taken 9 polygraphs, and every single time I told the 100% truth, and Ive failed (or had inconclusive results) on 4 of them.

The main part of the polygraph is the interview AFTERWARDS. He'll ask you what questions you were most worried about, or what question you felt you had a hard time answering. The polygrapher will make it seem like hes your friend, and that he is rooting for you, which is 100% BULLSHIT. He'll try to get you to admit shit after the test, and many people give in and give some more information about something, even though they may have had a flawless test. But since they witheld information, it shows a weakened integrity.

When it gets down to 15 applicants that have made it through the process, and theres only a few spots open, they have to start picking people apart and eliminating people on very minor things. Like John Doe here has 1 more ticket than everyone else....hes eliminated. Rich here stole more when he was younger.....hes eliminated. Etc etc etc.

Polygraphs should (and in many departments, HAVE) been eliminated from the recruitment process. If they cant stand up in court cases, they shouldnt be used in the recruitment process. There are some ways to TRY to beat the polygraphs, if you know which questions are control, relevant, and irrelevant.

Thanks -- I'll keep that in mind.

I know almost everyone on the department, and they seem to want me there, so hopefully that'll help..they're having a hard time finding someone for this position, which helps too -- I only have to beat out six other guys.

    I don't plan on witholding anything -- didn't do drugs..don't/didn't smoke..heck, didn't even have a beer until I was 21..

Meh - guess I'll see what happens. It may be different being a small town & small department...I can hope for it, anyway. :)

They called me back this morning -- I'm testing on June 2nd at 8am.

i am getting ready to start the testing process in june also. the polygraph is what i am most worried about because i had known people fail it even though they are 100% truthful, just like you did. my worry is about past drug use, but i have friends with a similar past and they are in. another one i am worried about which i have kown someone fail was being with a girl that is underage. when i was 18/19 i would date girls that were 17 and that is considered underage and i think that would be pretty common.

Thats actually not considered underage. Age of consent is what matters.

And just be completely honest about your past drug usage. In Maryland, if you have smoked weed more than 10 times in your lifetime, you are automatically DQed. If you have ever used hard drugs (PCP, Cocaine, etc) you are automatically DQed as well......no matter how many times youve used.

I'm running dry runs for my PT test now...only five days to go. I ran 1.4 (hilly) miles in 13 minutes -- need to run 1.5mi (flat terrain) in 13:06, so I think I should be all set by then.

From what I've been told, every officer I've rode with is pulling for me..even though they don't have anything to do with the hiring process, it's still good to hear. :)

    13:06 isnt too bad.....its 12:13 and 11:36 around here, 1.5 mile.

Benchpress your weight...obstacle course.....35 situps in a minute....23 pushups in a minute...trigger pull, and stretch test

That's odd..seems to be directed more towards aerobic activity than the NH one. For my age group, it is the following:

    1.5mi 13:06
31 pushups (no time limit, though..)
37, 39 or 41 situps in one minute (can't recall exactly)
    Bench press 96% of bodyweight

No obstacle course and no stretch test. These are entrance standards -- exit standards (after the academy) are slightly higher -- 106% bodyweight bench..not sure on the others.

Only one other guy showed up (should've been six total). There is another testing date, so I'm not sure how many are still in the running.

To my knowledge I am the only local applicant, so that should be in my favor. :)
