Jumps... How much can our cars take?

Ok, so i've gotten a little carried away with speeding on the street lately...

Last week I was flying down a side street and got to an intersection with a main road which had a rather large drainage hump in the middle. I went airborne and landed so hard the impact turned on the windshield wipers lol. There was a loud bang when I hit the ground, but the car appeared to be fine when I checked it out. Then today, I got a little airborne again off of an expansion joint, but the impact wasn't anywhere near as severe as the first one.

How much abuse like this can our cars take? Am I putting any suspension parts in danger from this type of activity? I'm not all that interested in seriously rallying the car, but what kind of upgrades would it take to do so?

wouldn't you be slamming down onto the oil pan as well?

i can't imagine that would take the abuse well...slow down on the street. it's not worth it.

lol, uhhh yeah everytime you bounce like that, not only are you hurting your suspension, but also the other parts that holds your wheels and suspension like the wheel hubs, ball joints, control arms etc... So far you are lucky it is holding, but one day, you do the same trick and one of them fails or bends upon impact, you'll be lucky if your car does not fall apart in pieces and you walk away with minor bruises. Rally cars, have a completely different suspencion systems, they are made to withstand more impacts than the cars we normally drive.

I figured that. This just gives me an excuse to upgrade though. :)

The corolla has 4 wheel macpherson strut suspension.. they're made to take punishment, the most perferred setup of offroad rally racing.

that is if there is something left to upgrade. Why don't you upgrade first then do your jumps. It's smarter that way, but hey its your ride. Do what you wish but be safe about it.

Well you certainly dont want to continue doing this....I mean, if you have to ask, then you should probably stop at that point...

I remember going airborne in my corolla...that caught me completely off-guard cuz it was a street that ive never been on b4 and it was at the end of a big turn and while you're turning, the road descends slightly down a hill and once you hit the place i went airborne at, the road went uphill again and because of the topography of the road, i just couldnt see the big dip and sudden hump in the road that shot me in the air, lol...when i landed, i came down slightly off kilter, like at an angle...so my wheels screeched and my car whipped around until my wheels were realigned with my trajectory...<<that whole thing sounded pretty technical, lol...

just remember if you are going to keep doing this you will destroy your undercarage... so my suggestion eather STOP or... weld some skid plates to you underside to protect your oil pan and exaust

Yeah...talk about thrashing suspension parts. There's a big difference between jumping a car in the dirt...which is slightly more forgiving than pavement or asphalt. I don't much about the underside of the corolla...but if I were to ever find a big enough jump to completely bottom the suspension out on my truck...not only would I destroy the nerf bars on the side...I'd blow another crater in the gastank. Probably crush my differential...destroy the struts in the front as well as the shocks in the back. Let alone the wear on ball joints...and even things like wheels. Most wheels aren't meant to take the entire weight of a vehicle in a shock-load condition.

...past all the damage you can possibly do to your vehicle...

    It's not safe!!!

I came around a corner once on my bike...hit a pretty decent bump just right...and had both wheels off the ground, by about 6 inches. While that doesn't seem like a lot...
In those few seconds while you are off the ground...you have...ZERO control over what is going on. If you hit your brakes too hard...when you come back down...your car will be moving faster than the wheels which will cause a wild loss of control. Same principle applies to riding a wheelie on a bike. While that front tire is off the ground...if you touch the front brake...and the front end comes back down...the rest of the bike will be moving faster than the front wheel...it's called high-siding.

Yea getting air is not a good things, unless your car is built for it and the corolla is not man.

Last time I got any air with my car it cost me a oil pan. Road Construction sucks

    Same difference man. LOL

Cause by the time that you do that, you will have built a rally car, which is expensive. LOL

For me, the ultimate (but not entirely realistic) goal is to have a car that capable of anything I throw at it... whether it be anything from Auto-x to a road course, to gravel, and even small jumps.

at the time my plans were not for a rally rolla, I just wanted something that handled better than stock, now I want to rally it so I'm doing some design things for it, that and I'm more than likey not going to use the 04 to do this.

You sit in front of a computer all day...your spelling should not suck as bad as it does man. You know I don't give you a hard time very often...but damn...your posts are sometimes as hard to read as those, "wat u up 2 2nit?" posts. *smacks Kris*
