    Another YZF600R.com Rant

Here ya go...I'd like to see people's take on this. He makes a few points that I tend to agree with...specifically when I can cruise down Hampden at 9:00 at night...drive past one particular point and see 9 officers, all tucked away in a corner...

But let's see what you have to say.

well, here in Huntsville, I don't feel the officers are slacking AT ALL looking for drunk drivers late at night. Since I've turned 21 and been going to the over 21 joints. I've been stopped about 5 times on the way home for 'swerving' and been given alcohol tests and had my plates ran. highest I've ever been = '.05'

    nervewracking

That is all nonsense. Sounds like the guys on that forum are a bunch of crybabies. Hes "offended" everytime he sees a radar trap. Subject to "impeachment" in court???? They are there collecting "taxes"? Is this dude in elementary school?? HAHA......

Every police department has a traffic enforcement division......a division that specifically enforces traffic laws. If something serious happens while a speed trap is taking place, officers will leave the speed trap. It isnt rocket science. Speed enforcement is a major operation......it will make someone thing twice about speeding in other parts of the city for fear of coming up on a speed trap. It will also make them think twice about more serious crimes.....racing, acting stupid, etc.

Also, speeding violations lead to other more serious violations. Didnt we cover this in the other thread? Next thing will be them complaining about DUI Checkpoints or something. Now that I think about it......I guess we should get rid of all traffic enforcement divisions, since he says that when theyre just driving around, nothing happens because every one is on their best behavior. Or better yet, those officers should just sit in their cars at the police station and wait for calls....because its not right for them to set stuff like this up. Or to sit at an intersection and wait for people to run red lights or stop signs.

Sounds like you need to keep both hands on the wheel then:)

How about his point where he says, "...handing out speeding tickets like they were coupons to Burger King..."

Do you think this has any merit? Considering I've known numerous people to get tickets on downhill slopes hitting 5-7 mph over the limit.

Well, 5-7mph over the speed limit IS still breaking the law, but I think there should be some leeway in that. A ticket for 5mph over is pushing it, but either way, I dont agree with a single thing he says.

...speeding is speeding. Its called the speed "LIMIT" because your supposed to stay UNDER the posted number, not 5-10 OVER. Just a thought.

And I tend to agree with both of those...but at the same time...couldn't it be argued that the traffic enforcement division LEO's, could find better things to enforce than these?

I tend to think that about 50% of the tickets I've gotten (4 to be exact) were really because the cop was bored and had nothing better to do.

    Or the fact that:

    A)You were speeding
    B)Its his job

Completely pointless and stupid rant IMO. What would you like them to do about speeders? Not enforce?

Sorry...I thought I had taken this through speeding and up into general traffic enforcement...

Both of the tickets I received...neither one was for speeding...both my speeding tickets I deserved and didn't argue about.

Enforcing traffic laws is one thing...ruthlessly enforcing traffic laws is kind of another. I understand LEO's are doing their job...but there is a point where you have to say, "Ok...that really was a waste of officer time."

Now don't get me wrong...I'm not saying that LEO's are a waste of time and money.

Example, I got pulled over one day running 65 in a 55. Granted I was slowing down due to a speed limit change. I got pulled over, while the guy in a Rav4...or whatever it was...who was in the process of passing me...(Exact same location, exact same time) kept right on driving.

    I can't explain it...he didn't give me a ticket...but it's something I don't understand.

You all can bitch and moan and about how traffic laws are there and we can't change them...which we can't...but that does not excuse from the fact that you want to bend and change rules for other things. (Totally different topic.) It's not the laws that are why I bring this stuff up...it's the ENFORCEMENT of these laws that sometimes seems to ruffle my feathers.

Isnt it an oxymoron to say that its wrong for a TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT cop to ruthlessly ENFORCE TRAFFIC laws???? So all traffic enforcement cops should wait for the guy going 30 over.....or wait around for the drage racers, and not enforce the smaller crimes?

You know...maybe Denver is the only place where this goes on. Obviously...I'm the only person who sees officers in the middle of the day picking on the lesser of multiple evils.

Did I ever say that officers should not enforce all traffic laws? No...

Did I ever say to wait for the most dangerous traffic offenders to come whipping around the corner at 40 over the limit? No...

I made the point, that I think alot of the traffic officers I have met are not enforcing for the sake of safety...but enforcing for the sake of nothing better to do. If there are no ticket quotas to meet...why are there so many people in court for defective vehicle tickets? Every now and again...a light bulb...really does go out in a tail-light. Sometimes it goes out while driving. Magic doesn't just pop in...and replace a bulb while driving.

...again...maybe I'm the only one who sees shit like this...but remind me to keep my nose out of traffic debates like this again.

They do it cause its their JOB. Thats is what the are employed for. They aren't supposed to have anything else better to do other than to look for traffic violations.

    Then what are you saying?
That is your opinion. I still fail to see what your point is......if there is nothing better to do (IE responding to a call of some sort), then enforcing the small violations is what is next on the list.

And MOST of the time youll get a warning. Is it wrong for a cop to pull you over for a brake light being out? Why are so many people in court for defective vehicle tickets??? Well, because theyre breaking the law by not maintaining their vehicle.
I still dont understand how you cant grasp the concept of TRAFFIC COPS enforcing TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS. You keep saying that they are doing it for the sake of just doing it. (Which is their job). Or they are going after the minor violations (Which is their job).

I don't think it has much to do with the amount of hands I have on the steering wheel as opposed to what time it is, what road I'm on, and what car I'm driving.

admittedly, .05 is high and I wish I would've rode with some friends
