But if you were following flow of traffic...how would people be whipping by you?

When you're trying to merge onto the highway, you wouldn't be able to get on if people were hauling ass even in the right lane (the lane to get on the highway)

Alot of people...me included believe in merging onto the highway as often as possible around 12-18 mph over the limit and then settling into the pace of traffic.

You know one of the main factors in rush hour?

People like my mother, who slow down to let people get on the highway at 20-30 mph below[/] the speedlimit.

That's just dangerous. First off, you rarely want to brake on the highway, meaning if you want to slow down then just coast. Second, it's better to keep your speed to let people merge: if you start braking or going faster for no apparent reason, then the people coming on can't get a good handle on where you will be when they try to get on. If possible, move over to the left lane when you start to approach an entrance ramp where people are coming on.

here's what i do... when i see someone on the ramp trying to get on the freeway, i pace myself on what speed that car is going... its either ima gun it to get in front of it leaving enough space on the back or is theres enough space, keep my speed and let it go through... never will i slow down though...

Assuming that there was a 100% flow

    Such the driving expert!

Right on. Just merge to the left if possible. I get pissed off when Im merging on and a single car doesnt merge left.

Knowing how traffic works around here...and knowing the path I take on each road.

(It amazes me how people who drive the same roads every day look like they have never been there before.)

We'll take highway C-470, getting on from an exit called Morrison Road. Traffic through there routinely goes about 73-76 (in a 65.)
Truck or bike, I'll come off that entrance ramp about 80-85 mph...this 99% of the time guarantees me to either have space in front of or behind another car. Then it's just a matter of settling into the pace of traffic.

So you're denying that a teen is more likely to get into trouble (and lose control) in a Supra or MR2T than they are in a Corolla?

    speed limits are serious bullshit.

speed limits and degrees of road curvature are designed for those mediocre at driving with mediocre performing cars to be able to operate their vehicles without dying. examples of a speed limit for a freeway calculation would have to do with the environment, and finding out the maximum stopping distance for that given leg of freeway. taking into account the worst human possible reaction time and deceleration time of the car with the worst brakes allowable on the road will give you a time. knowing this you can calculate the speed limit for the given roadway.

it's lame, and yes, you can get away with driving probably much faster than the posted speed limit safely, but paying top dollar for a speeding offense isn't very worth it..

I think it has to do more with preventing more serious accidents than it is figuring out how long the stopping distance is. Right now they say space out a certain amount of space for every 5 or 10mph......if the speed limit was increased, the recommended space would just be increased.
