Advice/Help Found an XRS Engine for Sale

So, I think the next step I want to take is to to an engine swap to the 2ZZ-GE, with the 6spd transmission. (and eventually turbo it) :)

I found one online at a parts place with 5,000 miles on it for $2500. The guy told me he could knock a few $100 off of the price also. For an additional $700, he can get me the 6spd tranny with 30,000 miles on it.

    What do you guys/girls think?

very low milage, and you can get it all for around the same as it would cost for a turbo set up. not bad at all.

    :)

I was loking at a similar thread someone just posted regarding the 2ZZ-GE Engine. It shold fit with just a 2ZZ wiring harness and ECU, right?

Do I need different motor mounts or anything?

from what i hear you'll need some custom mount work as well as axle work and of course wiring.

    Thanks deebs. :)

I see it like this, it may be a lot of work, but I see it as more not worth it to trade in my car and buy an XRS, which I would definitly be upside down on, rather than change the engine, tranny, and brakes... I thought about getting the XRS struts and whatnot, but I want a more updraded suspension than that anyway. lol

Also, this new engine only has 5,000, as opposed to my engine which just passed the dreaded 35,000 mark. lol

Someone mentioned axel work. That makes me nervous and curious...

Why is it so cheap? Why does a new engine (only 5k) pulled out of the car already?
If you want to turbo it later, 2ZZ is not good for turbo.

Rainbow, Not good for turbo? Do you have anything on that I can read up on? (That would definitly affect my decision to do the swap.) :)

There's a Dyno online (can't remember where) showing an XRS with a Haas turbo kit with stock internals 7-8 psi, pushing 286hp and 207lb-tq.

What makes it not good for turbo? The engine is comeing from a junkyard. I assume it was wrecked. I found a database online I can search for the XRS engine or any parts really all over the US.

There has been a quite a few people that turbocharged the 2ZZGE - some over at the Matrixowners forum (Haas turbo setup) and the one built up by Sport Compact Car. In that article, the car survived a 1000 mile shakedown after the turbo install (11.5:1 CR and 7PSI of boost) and then a 2400 mile durability run. This was with stock internals and pump gas (of course there were the modifications to engine management, fuel, and spark needed to be able to run the car safely). Ended up cracking a ring land due to detonation - that probably could have been avoided with more care (car changed hands several times, unknown fuel and treatment).

But probably still safer to turbo a 1ZZFE vs 2ZZGE - given the unknown quality of gasoline in places and the Oh $hit factor when something goes awry with fuel management or boost control.

I would go NA all the way and take advantage of the rev happy nature of the 2ZZGE. Supposedly the internals, minus the valve springs, are OK to 11K RPMs (was in an article, don't remember the name right at the moment). Or if boost pleases you - boost the bezejus out of the motor, you'll stick have the original 1ZZFE just in case.

A relatively low mileage engine of a relatively new design for $2500 is a good price. Even salvage price for a potential donor car with mostly usable drivetrain pieces is at least double that.

If you are skeptical about a turbo, maybe try a s/c. I know some one on 9th gen just got theres installed on the 2zz...

...but then again im in love w/ s/cers.

a s/c 1zz would be cheaper and less of a hassle, plus it keeps a warranty
