I'd highly recommend getting some sort of RAID card. A mirrored raid at the very least... I use RAID 5 in my music server.

I'll post up my list later.. busy cleanin the house right now.

A raid card would be nice but for a simple home file/music server i think its a bit overkill, unless you have a terabyte of MP3's and want them all under the same drive letter or you absolutly cannot afford to loose any data in the event of a crash. I personally have all my MP3's and Videos backed up on dozens of DVD's so that I don't have to run raid in my server :D However I do run raid on my main box purly for performance because Battle Field 2 takes far to long to load levels without a Raid 0 array :D

Yeah those would certainly do the trick. Just make sure your running 256 meg or more of ram to reduce the amount of page file swapping the file system has to do since your going to be pulling its storage from over the network continuously. This will prevent lag and prolong the life of your hard drive. Also Vortex's recommendation of raid is well founded for protection of data and performance however it will cost you more money for additional hard drives if you do not already have them and the controller. So if you have the cash then definatly go raid but if not you're server will still work just fine. Just make sure you have your data backed up on DVD's or CD's or DAT or something in case your new file servers hard drive takes a stanley steamer on ya.

overkill? hah --- i personally have WAY better things to do with my time than to sit around burning my mp3's to DVDs. Even going with the 8.5G DVD's i'm still going to be sitting through a whole day of burning. I've got almost 80G's of music, only to have to keep up and maintain the library everytime i add something (which is about on avg a gig or so a month). with my raid, i don't even have to think about it... if something goes bad with a drive, just swap it out and it rebuilds itself in about a half hour (while thats going on i can still use my data). If I have everything on DVD i'd have to sit down and reload everything in... sorry but ive got a LOT better things to do with my time. It's worth it to me to spend the extra couple hundred in the beginning than to sacrafice my time.

Hahahaha, I never disputed raid for your application :D I'm guessing your file server is not a celeron 400 either. Raid can get pretty expensive and it sounded like this guy wanted to build a server with what he had on hand. You almost sound irritated that I offered my input... Why?

it's an SATA RAID so it's not that expensive.

Not irritated... (don't read into the internet too much)

now on another thread... yeah i'm irritated, but not here. :)

This would definitely be done on the cheap side - if I'm going to spend the money on a SATA RAID card and two SATA hard drives, I might as well spend another hundred bucks and get an Athlon XP 2600+ combo..or something, anyway. :p
