    1. get a real job b4 you decide to tune your car - thats how ricers are made. save your cash to go to school

    2. no matter what you wont be able to make your rolla fast on a bk budget, unless maybe youre the manager

    3. buy quality parts, good tools, ect because otherwise you wont be able to work on your car, will probably break it

    4. learn how to drive 1st. whats even more important than the car is the driver

Just to give you an idea of what major mods cost...let me give you a quick run-down.

The project to lift my Tundra up in order to run 35" tires included the following.

2.5" King Coil Over Shocks for the Front - $450
Race Car Dynamics 6" Suspension Lift - $3000 installed.
Ring, Pinion & Gears for the front and rear - $1500 installed.
    315x75x16R 35" tires & 16x8 Rims = $1300.
    Re-program computer = $150

So you can see, major mods are incredibly pricey. To swap a 2ZZ into yours, first off you'd need the motor, the tranny & the ECU. Now to custom build a turbo is another multi-thousand dollar endeavor. The turbo system Vortex and I are designing for my 4.7L Iforce...by the time you count fuel management, piping, hardware and time spent...It's probably pretty close to about $3400.

Cheap mods are really hard to find if you actually want to get major stuff out of it.

I'm a supervisor in a multi-million dollar warehouse...I can barely afford the turbo system.

Keepin' your ride clean is great...keeping it running with heavy modification is a whole different ballgame.

Not flamin' ya, just bringing to your attention that vehicle modding is a very pricey hobby. :D

Hey guys, give this kid a break. He's only 16 with limited $$$. He's just trying to do what he can afford.
When you're 16, you always want to be cool and outstanding and doing something stupid like drugs. What's wrong with him just wants to *rice out his ride in this age? Everyone of us go via this "want to be cool" stage too man.

I don't want this to sound like I'm giving any one a hard time but here it goes.

You do have to pay to play and to do things right you will have to pay more. I know what its like starting out (as does most people on here) and not have a massive bank account to fund you. Like people have recommended remove sound dampening, look into new spark plugs, keep all your fluids running clean and at the right level. If you want something just fun to do paint up some of your engine components, change your headlights.

I think the most crucial thing is to have a plan. Know where you are wanting to head with your car. Like you stated you wanna drop in a 2zz and turbo it. You have goals which is good. You start getting ricers when an idiot that has no direction gets his hands on a set of keys.

Also, some one recommended cutting your springs. Thats the worst idea on here so please don't listen to that or you are going to end up hurting yourselves or others in the process.

sure there are some mods out there that are cheap for free and they airnt always "ricey" and if they are who gives a **** if the guy wants to be ricey. But it seems like you have some big plans in the way for the car like the 2zz FI swap and a manual tranny. I say just save up the cash and wait for the big things and do it drastic instead of small changes.

I completely agree. I also think its funny how everyone in here is laying down the whole "You have to pay to play" The Audi, BMW and Porsche club would laugh there *** of at that term being used by a buncha guys driving Corolla's :) Don't get me wrong I love my Corolla and will drive it until I can't get it running again but the reason I originally purchased the car was because it was the only thing I could afford that had the options that I wanted. If I really had the money to play I would be rolling a Toyota Supra, not a Corolla :D

Well not every body has mommies and daddies that will buy their kids BMWs. We have what we have for what ever reason. If we want to mod our cars...we'll mod our cars. And guess what, even if you have a BMW you still have to PAY TO PLAY. Were you trying to imply that because some one has a BMW or w/e that the dealership is like "Hey, screw me sideways..wanna turbo for free to go with that car?" Its the same across the board whether you drive a Daewoo, rolla, or benz.

To the original poster, I would save until you have $400-$600. At that point you could then choose whether to do suspension or Intake/Header/Exhaust.

    Catback - $300 on ebay
    Header - $100 on ebay
Intake - $30 for a SRI on ebay or a little more to to custom make a CAI

    OR

    Springs - $150 on ebay
    Struts - $300-$400 on ebay
    Installation - ~$100

Either one of those routes will give you a good starting point if you're going for performance. I painted the interior of my car and I think it was a very beneficial upgrade. When you find you've done fifteen $20 mods on your car, you end up with a slightly ricey car and a feeling that your $300 could have been spent elsewhere.

I think people in this thread have been where you are and are saying they would have rather spent their money on more meaningful mods, rather than the $20 variety if they could do things over.

Did you mean to put this in the powertrain section? Theres nothign wrong with wanting to mod your car with the least amount of money as possible, to start off with.

There are a lot of minor mods that you can do...change color of bulbs, add sidemarkers if you dont already have them, upgrade your headlight bulbs....all things that will make you like youre car more for being different than other corollas. You could paint your interior...Id invest in a haynes manual, and youll see how to take apart your interior....

But if you are asking what engine mods you can do for under 20 bucks, the list will be short. Regular maintenence stuff is where your 20 bucks would go.

I like silverstars. Right now I have am using bulbs from a company called luminetics (something like that). They don't have a lot of light out put, but I like the color. (I live in the city so light out put isn't always an issue)

I still say throw some new spark plugs in there. You aren't going to get noticeable gains, but if you get the right ones they can help w/ gas mileage and response.

my mr2 has cost probably less than $1500 out of pocket including the car price, new motor, new tranny, stand alone ecu, new brakes, new suspension.... & on & on.... and it walks away from MANY cars.....

knowledge of what you're doing and where to look for stuff is better than 'pay to play'

The above statement is almost in direct contradiction to the statement below.
Maybe I'm just not understanding you...but I don't understand how you want to keep it "normal passenger looking car on the inside," and then go out and paint everything inside? I'm confused here man.

I'm going to get a little off-topic just to respond to this. There are certain cars and trucks with a plethora of parts...available all over creation.

Then there are vehicles like my 2003 Tundra. Parts for this are few and far between.

I do know what I'm doing...and I do know where to look for stuff....but the fact that there is no...and I do mean...no competition on alot of this stuff, the prices are outrageous. So just because I used my vehicle as an example of the statement does not make it true to all cars...however, I'm pretty sure you didn't spend all $1500 of that in mods that were $20 or less, which is the point of this thread.

Hahaha :D Simmer down, I was just implying that for most mods you pay a lot less on a Corolla then you would on a BMW or BENS. I love my Corolla and the only reason I'm even responding in this thread to all the haters is because I have done a lot of mods for under $20 that turned out really great and made my car a blast to drive. I have also done some of the most expensive mods you can do to a 2001 Corolla (HID, TURBO, FLYWHEEl, etc). So I can see the picture from both sides. Thats all, I just can't understand why so many people are jumping in this thread flipping this guy crap about "rice" this and "pay tp play" that. :D

Can the 98 run irridium plugs? I have found them to work the best on the 01 Corolla but I don't have a distributer. I have indevidual coil packs. I tried running platinum plugs and the car didn't run nearly as smooth.

I think some one on that thread was talking about the irridiums. I didn't re-read through it since I did at one point in the past so I can't remember exactly what specifics were mentioned.

Ok, first off... being 16 your options are limited. Do what you want to dress up the insides, etc... but you are not going to get any *major* performance mods for under $20. The smallest modifications are at the very least $100 (or somewhere around there) Unfortunately the phrase is true, you gotta pay to play. Good luck to ya however. :)

Ok Jerry... don't take this personal but you need to be smacked with something heavy to reset your switch so you can think straight. :D

Now, there evidently is a thread about this that i'll go drop some knowledge on you in.

I didn't see this reply...so...I gotta say one last thing here...

Let me get this straight....you ask a question...and now your bitching at our reply?

FIRST off...don't ask a question if you can't handle the answer
If you wanna get the answer you want to hear instead of the honest truth then do this for us all...

In your subject line put "FOR RICERS ONLY" cause otherwise you're gonna get REAL replies and not just what you wanna hear.

You maybe shoulda taken the money you spent on rims and tires and saved it for actual performance enhancing mods...at least you did ONE thing good...strut brace
Second until YOU personally can explain to me why vvt has the potential to not be a good thing for boosting (even though it can be done) I recommend you NOT mod your car and RESEARCH.

Third...most of us were trying to not flame you out...but obviously you really really want it...

Fourth...I personally understand were you are coming from and kept that in mind...I riced the hell outta my honda accord before I learned and put her back to stock as much as I could...she's scared perm. from some things but I'm still working on that.

FIFTH and finally...you DON'T need to do any attempted mods to your car until you can afford it...and you won't without a job...and even then it'll take time...DON'T RUSH...
I'm a technician at a toyota dealership and my 240 is sitting in the driveway while I save for my engine/tranny swap...she'll sit some more (not as much) while I save for suspension and body enhancements...once I get those then I'll focus on pretty mods.

So in conclusion...you've got a lot to learn, and we WILL HELP...and just being 16 you've got PLENTY of time...so get a job...relax on the car...save some money...it's worth the wait to be able to do good mods.

And...try the search button..it works wonders for most questions...but hey...we've all forgotten about it once or twice.

**** people...why jump all over his ****? No where in this thread has the original thread poster gotten defensive, angry, pissed off, lashed back at ya, etc.

His car is far from rice http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2261556 and is trying to get ideas for cheaper mods due to his light budget.
