    roadtrip in lowered car?

Whats up guys, i was wondering if anyone had any comments on this. I'm expecting my tein h-tech springs to come in this week but i'm going on a roadtrip camping on friday. i was wondering if it would be a good or bad idea to drop the car before i go on the trip. I figure its a two hour drive and it would allow the springs to settle, plus the highway from los angeles to santa barbara isn't bad at all. any input/advice?

I was just about to ask the same question. Cause I'll be getting JspeXAE102 old suspension setup hopefully sometime soon when I can find a break from school. And I might be going to down to L.A this summer using I5

I'd definitely drive it, and a nice long stretch on a flat highway would be good to help break in new springs too... do it!

Nope, gotta let the springs settle BEFORE you get the alignment.

And I have a 1.75 drop on my passat and I put close to 35k miles a year on it. Springs are meant to be driven with!

Why do you need the springs settle before the alignment?
I thought they need to jack your car up in the air to do the alignment anyway.

uhm....just go over a few bumps and your good...you shouldn't have to drive 500 miles...they should "settle" very quickly...otherwise you've prolly got something loose...or wrong...or worn

as to alignment...sometimes you jack up the car...but you set it back down.

On the older alignment machines you jack up the car to calibrate the sensors (turn each tire a set amount 3x's)...on newer machines you just roll the car back and forth to do this.

Very rarely do you actually perform adjustemnts with the tires not on the ground

My car is lowered on S-Techs and Tokicos and I drive between DC and Atlanta all the time. I even did Atlanta to Miami and back with 4 people in the car. The worst thing you'll get is a little rubbing over big bumps.

How would you be able to get a proper camber reading with the tires in the air?

?? Go over a few bumps? Springs settling and springs locking into their perches/struts/shocks are two different things

well I was actually joking about the bumps thing ;)

Please explain though, because the springs will settle all they should when you place the weight of the car on them and back up
(this is only because after raising a car on a lift and setting it back down, the camber will be a bit posotive due to suspension movement and what not...happend to every car when you raise it on a lift)
...after that they shouldn't move, sink, sag, raise, or anything...I've never heard of this in any of my suspension classes, nor has any of our techs

In some cases you can make adjustment with the car in the air, only if the alignment rack you are using supports this...the one at our shop does, I forget why but my team leader (a Toyota Master Diagnostic Tech) had to. Since I wasn't working on it I didn't really ask.

Though in this procedure I'm pretty sure you jack the car up so that the springs are loaded...if not...the computer can compensate

Two hours? LOL - mine has been driven from FL to NJ and back, then from FL to NH. My dad took it from FL to WI and back also..but I'm not sure if it was lowered then. It's currently driving on frost-heaved roads with a 1.8" Intrax drop..and it's still in one piece.
