I was looking though the parts database and noticed a close ratio gear set for the 2ZZ tranny. I was wondering if they make stuff like this for the 1ZZ transmission. Can you get rebuild kits for the 1ZZ tranny that use really tuff synchros and really solid gears so you could take driving it like you stole it to the next level? I'm going to be boosting this weekend (Weather Permitting, the snow is comming down like crazy) and my next upgrade might be transmission internals because my 2nd gear syncho is acting up a little bit and I don't feel like spending the money for a whole new transmission

the only performance transmission gearset i know of is from a company in japan called c-one motorsports. even for just gears, it's serious money. its a closer gear ratio, so quicker acceleration, lower top speed.

Do you have a URL? I would like to see how much those gears cost and see if they come with some upgraded syncros.

they sell it as a kit, roughly 2000 dollars (19x,000 yen). not worth the money unless your car was for track, and it aint.

You don't want a close ratio gearset with a turbo car like yours. What you're looking for is a heavy-duty gearset, though I've never heard of anyone needing one.

What I would try to do is swap in an E58 or E51 tranny that comes with the 4AGZE. Those trannys are VERY strong (400-500hp plus), but I don't know if the bellhousing from the 1ZZ can swap over.

Now that I think about it, I tend to doubt it. I would see how far you can push the C50-series that you have, but the first upgrade you should be thinking about to the tranny is a Quaife LSD.

How much is a Quaife LSD and how much does it cost to have them installed. I dont like opening up the trans

I think it costs $1200, and installation... no idea, I would probably charge you $100.

Woah, you would only charge $100 for install? How long does it take to install? When we did my clutch we had to take the whole trans out and that was a major pain in the ass Your gifted

Well, I was assuming that you would send the tranny to me rather than bring the car up, if you're bringing the car up here and I have to pull it myself then it'll be more like... $300 for the install.

Hahaha, yeah pulling the tranny is a bitch. If I had to ever pull it again I think I would just do the LSD myself because it would probably be the easy part of the process

And check the diff bearing preload!!!

just so you know..... the E series had much taller gears than the C series trannies.... to give you an idea, my mr2 with an e51 can easily reach 120mph in 4th gear.

also, the E series trannies are NOT light. the trannies themselves are close to 140lbs. The axles are quite a bit larger as well, and too are quite heavy.

Lastly, finding a flywheel that will bolt up to a 6 bolt crank that can house a clutch that will fit an E series will be difficult. The output shaft on the E series are QUITE larger than the C series.

also, to give you an idea of their strength..... the E51 has the same gearset as the turbo mr2 transmissions (E150) but those use a different bellhousing & axles

You can swap in the newer version of the corolla tranny. The 2003 plus years. Then the differential will fit (Quiafe and Kaaz both will not fit in a 98-02 tranny I tried) also the final drive from a mr2 will fit and effectively "lengthen" your gears. MWR will sell you the final drive gear set if you cant find it anywhere else. Good luck getting any sort of new synchros though, you'll have to just pull some junk yard parts and wear them out. The 2003 plus tranny will bolt up with minimal alteration. You have to leave 1-2 bolts out and play with the rear most mount other than that it's really straight forward.

Wow, thats pretty hardcore. That sucks that the LSD doesn't fit in the 98-02. I really was dead set on getting one of those.

Oh good, one thing is for sure. I'm going to pay someone to install the diff because I dont want to mess with the tranny when the time comes This turbo put me at my absolute limits

Doc just ask monkeywrench, I tried. The differential is too long, the bearing sizes are incorrect and the ring gear wont fit. I just said screw it and went with the phantom grip. It's no quiafe but it's nice.
