Is it just me or does it look like that the new Passat are what Toyota should of made the 03+ Corolla look like. The new Passats resemble the 98-02 Corolla restyled at least with the taillights and trunklid. Though, the rear doors do resemble the BMW's. And didn't VW make an imatiation 03+ Corolla and called it the JEtta? What is up with VW and copying others designs and slapping their front end grill on it? And this article says it copied the Mercedes center stack on the new Passat.

The 03+ corolla is similar to many different types of cars. This topic has been exhausted on this board already.....too many cars look like eachother these days.

    Good article though!

true, my point is why does VW keep copying the Corolla design (and different generations at that )to use in their cars?

and personally, i think the current generation Corollas are too tall for their body. If they were longer or wide it would look nice. I know the car trends are going towards the egg shaped cars nowadays, but not very appealing to the eyes.

well, the 03 Corolla was out a few years or so before the new jetta was and so was the 98 generation corolla. had VW designed the jetta and passat the way they look now before Toyota, then Toyota would be copying VW's design. I am not saying they are copying each as in making identical cars such as the prizm and corolla, vibe and matrix, firebird and camero, or other chevy pontiac cars look alike. cuz these cars have the same engines and chasis and other stuff. so i believe they are intentionally designing these cars to be closely related. But could VW and toyota be doing a similar project teaming up with the passat and jetta and corollas?

you know what i'm am trying to say right?

It's the same manufacturer (insert another word for copying) 2 times on the same car. If it was different manufacturers each time it would seem less intentional.

Here's a thought... Can't car manufacturers patent like the designs maybe? like the front end? or how Lexus IS300 taillights are, etc. It would make cars more unique, but I guess there are only so many different shapes for a hood or headlight etc. and then the Aftermarket OEM factories would be dead, right?

Basically, if i was the designer of the COrolla for 98+for Toyota and I see all these similarities between the Corolla and VW Jetta and Passat, I think I would be a little bit pissed. I would be like....hmmm I think I will make the next Corolla with a replica of a Bentley on a Corolla chasis and only charge $14,000. When Bentley get pissed cuz it depricates their cars, I would say it's different cuz it's on a different chasis.

speaking of other manufacturers that 'copy', i heard kia or hundai is another big one that does it alot now along with bashing other manufacturers in their Ads.

I would feel sorry for VW if their designer were inspired by a corolla. There are much better looking cars out there.

Yes, we know what youre saying. It happens though. Every manufacturer out there has a car that looks like another manufacturers car. This is nothing new.

I can clearly see the similarities of the 03+ corolla and the newer jetta. When they are side by side, yes, they have similar body lines and front headlights. The rears are very different though.

I dont see any similarity between the 98+ corolla and the passat.

come on now, doesn't that just scream 01-02 Corolla rear. look at the trunk with the circular reverse lights and signal lights in the middle of the brakelight. And how the top of the trunklip is tapered similarly though a tad more extreme than the Corolla's. And the VW badge is same where the Toyota badge is. Clearly, VW 'borrowed' their design.

Seeing one in person kinda makes you do a double take cuz I own a 98 Corolla and I'm like whoa who revived the old 98-02 Gen Corollas again..

I wish some company would get really creative on the 98-02 corolla and do some really night LED tail lamps, probably not going to happen but it would be cool.

    I dont see it either.

But I totally agree with you on the 03+ rolla and the new Jetta. I have a picture somewhere of them parked next to eachother, and they are very similar.
