    Weed initiative in Denver?

so what do you guys think of it
    http://www.denverpost.com/politics/ci_3173687

Honestly, I think its great since I think that marijuana should be decriminalized, if not legalized, however It doesnt really accomplish anything. It shows that the people of Denver are opposed to Marijuana being illegal, and the useless waste of $$ and law enforcement efforts targeted at the drug (which is a whole other issue anyway) I think there are now 10 states where such initiatives are passed, but since this is a local law its superceded by State and Federal laws.
What will probably happen is that cops will just ignore it alltogether and charge people in possession under state law instead. I personally don't see the point in restricting someones freedom if it doesn't directly affect or infringe on others. I mean look at the crime rates in the U.S. Its similar to the rest of the democratic world, yet we lock up more than 6 times more people. Who are those people? The majority are non-violent drug offenders. Its clear that we arent winning the "war on drugs" and when things aren't working, shouldn't new policies be implemented?

I know ive gone a little beyond just the Denver initiative, but sometimes I just can't contain myself. So, what do you guys think of it? Good / Bad? blah blah blah.

I think it's wrong, it's a drug and shouldn't be legalized in any way.

Just in case people at the Denver DA's office thought there would be any doubts about their news release talking about the passage of Initiative 100, they added a not often used punctuation mark to the end of one sentence in particular to drive home a point.
"It is still illegal to possess and consume marijuana!"
One might blame the exclamation mark on a certain amount of confusion that arose after Tuesday's election.
Denver voters passed I-100 by a 53% to 47% margin. I-100 allows for the private use and possession of less than an ounce of marijuana within the city of Denver by people who are older than 21.
There's only one problem to that as far as Denver District Attorney Mitch Morrissey is concerned.
"The change in Denver's city ordinance does not change Colorado state law. It is still illegal to possess less than an ounce of marijuana anywhere in the state, and that includes Denver," says Morrissey.
Morrissey's office has taken a number of phone calls from news agencies outside of Colorado inquiring about Denver's "marijuana law," according to Denver DA spokesperson Lynn Kimbrough. She says her office remains concerned people outside of the state will get the impression it will be alright to come to Denver to smoke pot.
The spokesperson for the "Yes on I-100" remains defiant. "This is not it. This is the beginning of a national movement towards repealing these ridiculous laws," says Mason Tvert.
Tvert says prosecutors and police in Denver should listen to the will of the voters and not cite anyone for the private use and possession of less than an ounce of marijuana. Under state law it remains a class 2 petty offense punishable by a $100 fine.
Tvert says he would like to see a statewide initiative decriminalizing the use of marijuana perhaps by 2008.

Please explain why you feel that way.

Im not sure how I feel about it....Ive smoked weed in the past, and if anything, it helps the food industry....lol.

Either way, the local law means nothing without the state law changing as well.

I'm not gonna lie either I've puffed the magic dragon before too dude but what they did is practically making a drug legal, maybe not too much of it but still you know.... it's my point of view though.

But youre still not showing a reason WHY you feel the way you do.

Do you feel that marijauna is more dangerous than smoking cigarettes?

Death from marijuana overdose is IMPOSSIBLE. Marijauna is being used for medical purposes to kill certain kinds of cancer.....

If you actually take a step back from your overall current beliefs, and ask yourself "Why is weed really illegal??", youll start to see that maybe it shouldnt be illegal.

You keep saying that it should be illegal because its a drug.

DRUG: drug ( P ) Pronunciation Key (drg)
    n.

    1. A substance used in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of a disease or as a component of a medication.
Such a substance as recognized or defined by the U.S. Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.
    2. A chemical substance, such as a narcotic or hallucinogen, that affects the central nervous system, causing changes in behavior and often addiction.

Do you believe that alcohol should be illegal too, since thats a drug as well? Im not attacking you here, just wondering what your train of thought is. I think too many people take stands on issues just because its the norm, without actually thinking about it realistically.
