    how much to rebuild transmission

I have a 2001 corolla and it's got 120k miles on it. everytime i downshift from 3rd to 2nd gear, it grinds. I believe it's the synchros on it. But im thinking that since i'm gonna replace that synchro, i might as well do the whole thing.
So does anyone know about how much it'll cost (parts / labor) to rebuild a 5spd manual for my car?

no idea - but if you're ever goin to do serious mods, go buy another one. :)

on that note you can probably find one low mileage in a junkyard for about 500 bucks which should be around 2/3 of what it costs to get a rebuild. just a thought.

my 2-3 synchro is also damaged.. wonder if this is a common problem? anyway, mine works about 3/4 of the time still so, I'll live with it. But every so often it grinds like crazy

When I shift into third it doesn't grind, but I get a metallic sounding clack sound. Alot of sports cars make a "snick" sound when you put them in gear, but I don't think the sound my car is making could be good for it.

i believe thats what synchros are for..so people dont have to rev-match every downshift

    Info. taken from HowStuffWorks.com

Synchronizers are there to help you when you aren't rev-matching the shifts. They create a friction between the the collar (the "gear" gonnected to the driveshaft) and the gear you're shifting to. This friction gets the gear spinning to the right speed before full contact is made. Without the synchros you'd have to "double clutch" every time you down-shifted. Even though they help you out, you shouldn't rely on them. I cringe at the thought of people down shifting w/o rev-matching....the car lurching as soon as you let go of the clutch...<shudder>.

My friend was proud of his dual-friction clutch on his Saturn. Then he started down-shifting w/o rev-matching. I yelled at him.
