Why not ? there's a You Tube video with a Supercharged TRD Celica GT running a 13.9 in a 1/4 mile. But than again you are right about the cons in supercharging.

my suggestion on a nice turbo kit for a stock engine/daily driver:
JGS precision manifold
t3 super 60. (internally gated to 7psi)
2.5in turbo back exhaust. (muffler and resonator of your choice)
2.25 - 2.5in intercooler kit
BOV (cheap option is a 1st gen DSM bov)
370cc/min injectors (can be a little bit bigger, but i wouldnt go much smaller than 350cc/min)
as for fuel management, if your non vvti you really have 2 options. a piggy back like the greddy emanage ultimate (dont go for the blue) or swap to a DIY plug and play megasquirt from DIYautotune.
if your vvti, then i would say go the power fc route. but you will need to swap youcorolla ecu harness connectors for celica gt connectors.
either way i would recommend a j&s safeguard, aem uego wideband, and a egt/pyrometer of your liking.

i actually wrote that on toyotanation. its a brief outline of a basic kit. there is obviously little things missing, like the oil supply lines and t bolt clamps. things of that nature. but for the main components thats it.

rockauto.com offers a head spacer. think of it as making a thicker head gasket for our cars. its a solid piece of steel that is used, sandwiched between 2 head gaskets. the point of doing this is to drop the compression ratio of the engine, down to something a bit more boost friendly like 9.0-9.5:1. the down side, it basically eliminates the taper squish combustion chamber that the 1zz has going for it. but the point it kinda mute, since the taper squish came into play so the engine was more detonation resilient with higher engine compression. lowering the compression reduces the risk of detonation.

fuel pump is also a must. walboro 255lph or bigger.
