    01-02 Corolla Fog Lamp Install

01-02 Corolla Foglamp Install (Part 1 - Exterior)

Why 2 sections? because I haven't ordered the interior parts yet.

    Equipment
    2x fog lamps (1 left, 1 right)
    flat tip screwdriver
deep socket 10mm ratchet or 10mm wrench
    2 unknown bolts .. metric OD=10mm
Time to complete section 1: 40 minutes

First get a general idea of where all the locations are you'll need to work on. You can obviously guess where the foglamps go and get a general idea of the interior items from this diagram.

getting under the car you can see where the plastic cover sits that replaces the fog lamp. if you move your head almost directly under that plastic wedge and look upwards you can see a wire and connector tied below the headlamp. It's just flimsy tape that you really don't even need scissors to break.

First step is to remove the old plastic covers. Above you can see there is 4 clips that hold the plastic piece in place. I found that it's easier to flex the actual bumper than these clips because they are extremely hard and do not flex much. I removed them by prying above and below the plastic piece to flex the bumper enough for them to escape.

Once these are out you have a nice ugly hole in your bumper. I took a wet rag and cleaned the areas exposed by removing the plastic covers just because I didn't want any dirt lines around the edges of the new lamps.

The next step is to pull the fog lamp harness wires free from the metal bar under the headlamps. I did this after installing the lamps and could barely fit my hand in any more, so I suggest doing it first. I simply pulled on the wires a little and the tape came off. No tools needed; if you remove the tape this way please DO NOT pull on the connector. pull the wire only; otherwise you risk damage to the connector and a wire could fall out.

Once that is complete it's time to refer to our picture again. where-as the old plastic plug had 4 points it holds onto the frame, the new lamp has 2 metal spacers, a screw, and a slotted piece on the side. You'll see a partially pushed through section in the bumper where the red line is above. the fog is pushed sideways into that slot, then straight back so the screw on the lamp goes through the hole on the left of the photo. With a gentle push you'll hear a light snap sound. Hold the lamp gently to make sure it doesn't fall out since it's still loose.

Now it's time to get under the car again and stick a bolt on to the back of the screw and tighten to 1.0 NM (10 kgf-cm,9 in.-lbf). I don't know the size of the bolts you need but I was lucky enough to find 2 that worked in my garage. Now you can connect up the dangling foglamp harness wire to the wire coming out the back of the lamp.
(notice the silver dial in back.. that's for adjusting the lamps aim)

Go OOOh and AHHh at your new fog lamps as you wait in suspense for Part 2 - Switches & Relays

hey i was wondering if any of you have experience on installing fog lights on cars. I am driving a 2003 Toyota Corolla CE with automatic. I bought these fog lights, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/e...d=1,1&item=8021504612&sspagename=STRK:MEWN:IT awhile back and trying to install it before I give the car to my brother. I have everything set up but the problem is that for some reason its not working. Any suggestions?

For us to really help you out, you'd have to explain to us exactly what you did (i.e. where did you connect your wires).

Edit: Wait, I see you've purchased OEM style lights. Well, still could you be a little more specific as to what you've done?

now the problem i am having is on the last picture. i have everything connected except that one plug. not the one with the switch or the relay but that one plug that is laying on the ground by itself.

those do not look like 01-02 foglamps at all. the connectors on mine only had 3 pins and the wires we're about 6 inches then they plug into the onboard harness under the bumper
oh, I see you have an 03. That kit doesn't look like an OEM replacement really since it has a fog lamp button. All the corollas have a ring that turns on the headlight wand I think.

not really, the wiring seems somewhat generic. You would connect the relays between the battery and each light, then the switch to the battery and the crossed wires of the relay's signal wires on the other side.

    edit:

ok I looked at your pictures, I see what's wrong.

they are using a single relay for the whole system. so, those bare wires coming off the fog lamps should have one of those 4 pin connectors on it. it seems to be missing?!? so ugh, that sucks

they must expect you to add extra wire inbetween the two and solder it or something

Bump to this :p Anyone know if the 01-02 rollas already have relays in them. If so, then basically all i need is the housings for each one and the switch?

just buy yourself a 20 dollar wiring kit from pep boys. you can still manage to do a clean install and you can have your fogs on whenever.

the wires are already there so all i would need is the relay, housings, and the switch. ive already called toyota and asked the price for the switch and it was around $90-$110. cant remember right now. plus i want to be able to control the fogs because the cops in my town are real douch bags. my dad got a ticket on his older es300 because he had yellow fogs. the thing was that THEY CAME FROM THE FACTORY LIKE THAT!!!

it's going to give you the stock look, i won't deny that. but another hundred dollars on just the switch and relay. that's a lot of money for me. And I do have a switch for my fog lights. right now they can only turn on when the ignition is on but if i wanted to i could've tapped into the headlights so that they turn on with the headlights.

Ok I am now trying to find some housings. Ro2la can you show me your setup? I dont plan on buying a switch anymore because toyota wants to rip me off and nothing on ebay. I want to wire my fogs so they turn on with the headlights and since I got DRL, I want the fogs to be DRL too. Anyone know how I can wire this up?

Gah where does the damn relay go? I have everything opened up and I found a gazillion wires from my alarm system. I can barely see anything in there. Can someone tell me what it is next to or something?

I think there is a DRL wire in the center console but im not sure. I have my fogs wired up to my parking lights. I don't think it would be too efficient for it to be on seemingly all the time with your DRLs.

If you do choose the parking light route as well, you wouldnt need to worry about a relay.

I finished this project a while back.

After all the above is finished install a new 15 amp fuse in your panel (labeled fog on the back of the little cubby box diagram.

to install the oem switch you remove the foot guard, driver side kick panel, the lower plastic, remove the metal kick plate & loosen the steering shaft cover .. 2 screws that can only be reached by turning the steering wheel, and 1 that sits below. Pull the bottom part of the cover, then loosen the screw near the key hole that holds the top part of the cover snug against the steering shaft. Disconnect the wiring harness to the wand, remove the 2 screws, slide it out of its track, replace with the new one and reassemble.

The relay goes in an empty relay socket way up in the driver side dash. If you get your head way down there you can see where it goes. Way up top of the relay junction panel toward the firewall. after this your fogs should now work.
