Kumosport Shifter Bushing Install

This isn't really a good DIY or anything, just to show you guys what a pain in the fuckin ass this was to install. very worth it though, the shifts feel more direct and connected to the transmission. the new bushings are aluminum, the old ones were rubber. now i don't waste energy moving around the shifter assembly and shifts seem to be a bit easier. the shifter you see there is a TWM short shifter. also , here is a link to where you can buy the bushings if you're interested: http://www.kumosport.com/krd-213-01.asp . it's the one for the celica.

so the first step really is to take off the door sills, the little things in the corner, the plastic piece under the steering wheel, the metal piece under the steering wheel, the glove box, the trim around the AC thing and the little box under there where you put CDs. this is so you can remove the center console and the e-brake housing::




When you're done with all that, the inside of your car should look like this:


so that you have exposed this:


ahh, halfway done, time for smoke:


now, time for install:
remove the old bushings by sticking a 3/8" socket extender through the middle of the rubber bushing and removing the metal axle type thing, and pull out the rubber bushing itself with pliers. then put the new bushings on the top and bottom of the attachment points of the shifter assembly::


when you're done it should look like this. as you can see, it's a perfect fit!


then, tighten:

These things are still running great 8 years later!

I have paired them with the Speed-Source Shifter Cable bushings set: http://speed-source.net/?wpsc-product=toyotascion-shifter-bushings , and this has removed as much slack as possible from the shifter assembly and linkage. It felt great even on the track, and this setup (speed source cable bushings + kumosport base bushings + some short shifter) is highly recommended to all 5MT 8th gen owners.
