Engine Turbo Manifold

    oops :oops: i guess you guys are correct.

    ive always thought that twin turbos use the same turbo size. Sorry for the confusion. I just learned something new today :)

    Ok, so basically with your 3 turbo setup you would hen want to run a very small one, running around 3 psi of boost. Then have your med one for about 10 psi boost, then the big-un that would run around 15 - 20 psi.

    This is also why guys with bigger turbos on a 4cyl engine will run small shots of nos. It helps to spool up the turbo and creates the same effect as a smaller twin turbo setup.

    And (all flaming aside) its also one of the "advantages" of having a small E-turbo type item on your car.


    *Please note: I have not seen actual results of an E-turbo on a real turbo charged car. the thoery is there to say that it should help that tubo spool up. But that ONLY aplies if you beleive it will help an NA car gain power as well. I am only stating what I have heard, and therfor would apreciate the flame posts not even starting.

    ...why would a small displacement I4 engine need even two turbos, let alone three? A twin turbo setup is generally found on I6 and V6 cars in which each turbo "feeds" three cylinders (basically cars w/more than four cylinders, as a matter of fact the only two turbo system I've ever heard of for a four cylinder engine was found on the old Legacy B4 and this was done to compensate for the cars additional mass). Sequential turbo systems use a smaller turbo to reduce turbo lag and then switch to the larger turbo once a certain PSI has been accomplished. The 1ZZ does not need more than one turbo, I've actually done all of the turbo sizing math already and posted it here. As you can see only one turbo running at 11PSI would be more than enough to easily accomplish more than 200whp, which I believe is more than adequete in a car that weighs a little more than 2500lbs. The compression ratio really does not need to be changed unless you're planning on running more than 11PSI of boost, the 10.5:1 ratio would actually help in spooling a smaller to medium sized turbo more quickly. Sleeving the 1ZZ wouldn't be a bad idea either in addition to forged internals and performance coatings for the compressor side of the turbo and turbo manifold.

    ...as for engine management, well you're fooling yourself if you think you can run any form of forced induction w/o at least making chages to the fuel map to compensate for the new requirements (larger injectors and fuel pump). The Apex'i SAFC is nice, but the SAFC II is now available and the GReddy E-Manage is also another very capable choice. If you choose to run forced induction w/o some form of engine management you'll more than likely end up like that fool that ran 18PSI of boost on a stock WRX Mitsu turbo.

    Don't get disappointed if that "mod" doesn't win you any trophy at all :cry:

    A Show Car is judged by Creativity, Cleanliness, Attention to Detail, Color Scheme, and (sometimes) Spectator Votes. You put three turbos inside your hood and next thing you know, you see a thread somewhere and your hood pic is in there while a group of people are making fun of it. I see this happen all the time on many shows.

    no no no it wouldnt be made so to say "painted yellow"... It would be beyond that because the way it would be made would make it look 1. expensive 2. clean and 3. effective (even though it wont really do much)... I'll draw some blue prints for it and post them up so i can get some feedback...

    ...well you'll simply have to excuse me for not comprehending the merits of spending valuable resources on adding turbos that will do little enhance performance (which you admitted yourself). Actually, I'm not sure if adding a triple turbocharger system or whatever in the world you're calling it would be any more effective than those faux intercoolers and electronic blow off valves.

    Hey, i dunno about all this twin and triple charging stuff, but if you're interrested in making a single turbo manifold for the 1ZZ, lemme know, maybe we can work something out :)

    EDIT: I just read that you need some stock manifolds to make a turbo kit, would this be correct? If so, lemme know, i'll go ahaid and buy some headers and send you my stocker and a few bones :)

    I think its great that he's looking into making a twin turbo set up fo the corolla. It would be something I would be interested in in the future. I know Syndicate said the corolla ony "needs" one turbo, but for some people (like myself) I can never have enough power. If I had the choice(and money), I'd have my car twin turboed and supercharged. Thats just me. Then you wouldn't have to worry about turbo lag and other things. I'm sure it would take a long time to fabricate and build a 1ZZ engine like that, but think it would be worth while. Maybe its just me, but let him try it out and see if he can get it working. But the whole 3rd non fuctional turbo, I'm not in for all that. In my opinion, a Twin turbo set up thats clean will suffice.

    ok let me clear this up for all you people who are starting to annoy me ;)

    the only reason i would make a 2 or 3 turbo manifold is if someone wanted it for putting their car into a car show... if you have any idea the cost of making a maifold, its about $50 the most... the labor is what gets you, and i dont mind putting the labor into making this for someone if they want it... save me the bs and unless you have something positive or constructive criticism, dont bother posting... thanks

    Some useful info

    Hey guys, couldn't help but notice this thread.

    Multiple turbo's: there are two types.

    - Twin turbo: basically, you've got a big engine and don't want to feed it with 1 huge turbo. Especially nice on V8s and V6s, where the exhaust ports are on 2 sides of the engine. Good for racing when necessary.

    - Sequential turbos: RX7, Supra... This is a small turbo that spools at low revs, and a big one that starts spinning up once the little one is making its set boost. Very complicated, supposedly decreases lag. Not used for racing.

    For a 4-banger, you want 1 turbo period. Have you looked at fitting a turbo to the Corolla engine? There isn't much room and it's not very visible for show purposes. Getting it to fit and work would be quite a project with no rewards.

    Engine management: if you add a fuel pump and 550cc injectors, more than doubling your injector size, the car will run terribly if at all. You need a piggyback or standalone ECU. We use the GReddy eManage on the Corollas, Celicas, and MR2-S with great success. It keeps the stock ECU in place. If you're going to go wild the Apexi Power FC is a great plug-in standalone that'll do whatever you ask of it. Either would be fine for a basic 10psi turbo setup, the PFC will make more power though.

    That's a twin turbo, the 3rd exhaust pipe is from the wastegate.
