For some reason my redline went up lol. I was shifting the first gear or two around 6450rpm. Didn't do anything to the ecu. But as of now, the supercharger has been great for a non functioning vvti motor so I guess the results will be very similar to a non vvti car lol

I thought about it. But I can't figure out how it would. Maybe my tach is just off lol

    Great progress!

I found out on the track that the car will actually rev up to 6500 ish even though the red zone starts at 6200-6250. No good revving a 00-02 corolla 1zz that high though...

So you put the intake cam from a 98-99 on the 00+ exhaust side? Is that a true dyno tested upgrade? I know that the vvt-i algorithm changes the cam angle to either eliminate or introduce cam overlap. In the high load case it will increase the overlap at low to mid engine speeds, then eliminate the overlap at high engine speeds to give the best possible output. The advance/retard angles are with respect to the exhaust cam's profile (which doesn't change), so I'm just wondering if the new cam's larger duration will have a positive or negative effect when vvt-i comes into play.

How are you revving to 6.5k when the fuel cutoff is at 6.2k?

Well the cam swap hasn't been dyno proven, but it has been done by someone running a celica GT ecu and they stated that it was extremely beneficial. Quick2000 was also running a celica Gt ecu but his power would fall off at around 6.6k or so, but with the cam swap he would have pulled to 7k with out feeling power fall off at all. We had planned to do it to his car but it was totaled before we could.

@Irvin I think its definitely the trd ecu lol because your mph adds up with the shift point your at now, so i doubt your tach is off.

Lol I have no idea how it's doing it. I guess it is the TRD ecu. Now that I look at it. It does intercept a lot of major signals.

I don't feel power falling off at redline. You guys need to remember. N/A modifications don't always make much power if any on boosted applications. Totally different can of worms.

I gotta put the new OCV in to retest the 8th gen ecu vs celica ecu. The first test is invalid since the OCV is not working.
Once it's working properly. I will repost the results.

All I can say is that it pulls pretty friggen hard with no vvti

Yea I would assume that you wouldn't be feeling a power fall off, was just trying to explain what the benefit of the cam swap would be.

Looking forward to the new results.

Yeah as soon as I get the motivation... Normally it takes 1 minute to change the OCV. Now it takes more than half hour with the supercharger in the way lol

SO I tested it out today. The TRD ecu does increase your Redline to 6500 rpm. What a wonderful surprise! :)

I just retested as well, stock '02 ECU manual rev limiter is at 6400 rpm, not 6200 on the tacho. Nice +100 rpm!

Hmm. Now I don't know if the rev limiter is higher or not. It looks like 6500. Oh well. I never knew that the rev limiter was at 6400 stock. This whole time I thought it was 6200 lol.

Oh and I replaced the OCV tonight and found this...

Now the OCV works but now I believe the vvt-i actuator is broken or something. Vvt-i stays engaged and my car
runs like crap. Gonna try a new vvt-i actuator since those are known to fail also. THIS Sux!

Are the signals going to the OCV appropriate? Are OCV part numbers the same between 8th and 9th gen?

This document doesn't have good enough scale for the signals, but it looks like the "hold" signal is 50% duty cycle.

When you say it's always engaged, does that mean the cam is at full advance or full retard the whole time? If the cam is already at full advance, and the ECU keeps sending the advance signal (>50% duty cycle) could that break the OCV like that?

When I first started the car with the new OCV it was working fine. Then it started running horrible after a few minutes of driving. It started running normal after I revved it several times at idle. Then I just disconnected the OCV and drove it about 15 minutes mixed driving and ran fine like it has been. The way I figured the actuator was getting stuck full advanced is. At idle with the OCV disconnected, I quickly activated the OCV by zapping 12v to it for about a quarter of a second. Just a quick zap. Under normal circumstances that wouldn't cause too much of a engine performance issue. But in this case, the engine continues to run rough as if the vvti was full advanced all the time, even with the OCV unenergized. I could also hear the solenoid in the OCV return to the rest position so I know it's not the New OCV sticking open. In order to get it to run normal again. I've got to rev it for a while to try to get the vvt cam to go back to the "Locked" position.

The OCV's are the same between 8th and 9th gen 1zz-fe's.
So are the vvt actuators. They have been superceeded by a new part number.
The vvt actuators are known to fail a lot in both the 1zz and 2zz's.

On a super plus note. My 2zzge I pulled from my Matrix was making the same operating noise as
my 1zz with the OCV disconnected. The engine makes a slight tapping noise coming from the top of the
engine. So I think my spare 2zz in the garage is actually good but just needs a vvt actuator

UPDATE: That ticking noise wasn't the valve train... It was a spun rod bearing... :-0

Yes.. And that's why I'm pissed. I followed everything to spec. Every torque and detail. I took my time doing it. Oh well.
    shit happens

I wouldn't really call it a "Rebuild". All I did was change the pistons and rings. I used the same bearings ect.

Either try rebuilding the first motor I pulled that was burning a crap load of oil or just buy an 06-08 engine.
Been looking through all the different forums. Unfortunately These motors are problematic with spinning bearings.
Even after rebuilds. What a shame.
    Added: Sep 23, 2012 5:20 AM
BTW. I know it wasn't the supercharger that damaged the engine. I heard the slight rod knock when I first started the engine after the rebuild. I put a crap load of assembly lube between the bearings and journals too. I did prime the engine too. Ask Cbass, He was there when I primed it. I put about 1000 miles on the engine before it totally spun.

Damn, sorry to hear. Were you clearances all consistent with each other or was there a weak one that was lingering at the tail end of spec?

I really couldn't tell you. All I changed were the pistons and rings. I did a visual inspection of the bearings and they all looked fine. No scoring or burnt marks. I know for a fact I assembled it correctly. Apparently these motors don't like to be opened or something.
