i believe mounts are the same, exhaust manifold would need an 8th gen or aftermarket, and the ecu needs to be changed if you want the higher redline.

I don't see a point. The hp is negligible.

yeah i agree.. also, i believe the older ones are lighter which is in your favor for power to weight ratio. i re did the insides of my engine and got 162 hp out of it, so in my opinion the older ones are better. even if you put the XRS 2ZZ-GE (which is even heavier) you'd still be at a loss. the only thing you'd be getting out of it is an engine that'll last longer.

vvti would be nice and hey that motor got alot less miles then a 98 or 99 motor ... and don't the new motors not have the oil burning problem?

VVTi is for emissions only. It does not add power. VVTLi is the only one that adds power. Power differences are dependent on the cams and tuning. Early VVTi 1ZZFE's and later 1ZZFE's do not have oil burning problems. Only the ballpark 00-02 had that problem.

good info man, i guess the last thing that nobody has given a clear answer to is will an 08 1zz line up with my existing motor mounts of a 98?

because in my area i've only found two 1zz's one of them is a 99 with miles unknown and second a 08 with 30k miles in it

03-08 izzfes should mount up just fine as long as they have a tranny from an 8th gen i believe?

answer this, are you looking to put in a newer motor and spend money to make it work or you just want a straight swap? if you want a straight swap go with the 99 motor and if you planning to do a different motor go 2zz and to answer your question i think it could fit since its the same engine code maybe with some little adjustment.

Ahh sweet...you got a built 1zzfe like everyone else also. That's JDM tite yo! :lol

If you want VVT-i in your 98 be prepared for a headache in wiring and getting sensors checked. After my swap, I am still dealing with ocassional CEL on EVAP codes from different EVAP sensors in the fuel canister and MAP to MAF issues from different hose routing and sensors that did not come in the non-vvti models. Also, the A/C idle up is controlled by the ECU in the 1zzfe engines. Due to the different A/C switch and setup in the 9th generation, the ECU will not work with the A/C ampilifier setup in the 8th generation. What this means is that you will have low idle to the point when you may stall out when your A/C compressor cuts on.

Currently, I am working on a idle-up valve from the 7th gen and earlier setup. I fear that this trick may give me more problems in that the ECU will sense a vaccum leak and throw more CELs. Plan B is to get the 9th gen A/C electronics and somehow rewire this into the 8th gen.

uh actually VVTI increases horsepower and decreases emissions.

it doesnt increase power, it was put in to decrease emissions. Vvti =/= vtec, it is completely different. Vtec keeps something in the engine open(idk what it is specifically), allowing gas and air to spew in which increases power at high-end. Vvti regulates and synchronizes the valves so that less fuel/air is wasted. The increase in power from the vvti engines was simply better design over the shoddy construction of the 98-00 engines. Notably the valve seals/pistons/cams. All of which were resdsigned in the 1zz's for the 9th gen. The celicas are ranked at 130hp because they have a little bit better engine tuning, same with the mr-2s.

from the 1zz celicas obviously. and yes it does work. something about how the wiring harness/mount fits in an 8th gen corolla, but not in a 9th gen.

    Gotta bump this...sorry

got to clear some things up, might be getting a 9th gen engine or the manual 8th. still thinking about it.

--so a 9th gen engine will fit an 8th gen with the same engine mounts right?

--can the 8th gen wiring harness be used with the 9th, or do i need the 9th wiring harness? and if i do does it need any sort of modification?

--can a 8th gen ECU be used for the 9th gen engine? i understand i wont be getting the higher red line.

--can a 8th gen tranny be used with the 9th gen?

hope you guys can answer them all...thanks!

Based of what mackman told me, i think you can use a 9th gen tranny on an 8th but youll need some kind of adapter, and you'll need an ECU thats appropriate for the motor otherwise it wont run right because of the VVT-i.

I think one of the mounts is different, the tranny should be the same (I think) need the newer ECU, wiring harness for the newer engine to work. Hummer I was referencing the 2ZZGE from the Matrix. That tranny is the one you need the adaptor for. But that is a secret so shut the fuck up lol

all zz engine series transmissions bolt up to each other without any adapter needed. with that said

-so a 9th gen engine will fit an 8th gen with the same engine mounts right?
    Yes it will bolt up

-can the 8th gen wiring harness be used with the 9th, or do i need the 9th wiring harness? and if i do does it need any sort of modification?
depends on if your 8th gen has vvti or not. if it does you can use ur same wiring harness, if not then you have to either swap in ur non vvti cams in the 9th gen motor or get a vvti harness

-can a 8th gen ECU be used for the 9th gen engine? i understand i wont be getting the higher red line.
basically the same answer as above

--can a 8th gen tranny be used with the 9th gen?
    yep

I could have sworn the 2zz (6 speed) has a different bolt patter than the 1zz (5 speed)
