Some Of My Photos - Comments Welcome

These are some of my photos that I've taken over the past year or so. There are too many to post all at once so I'll start with some of my fav ones first. All of them were taken with a Canon EOS 450D DSLR, and all of them are HDRs apart from the butterfly one. Comments/criticism very welcome.

Thanks bro. I'm starting to run out of places to go here in Auckland so I'm hoping to hit the road and find new spots up and down the country. I hope to be able to make some money off some of the shots one day.

Thanks mate, much appreciated. Lol, know what you mean, usually never anyone online at this time of the night. 10:13pm here at the moment, daylight savings has screwed up my body clock.

Here's some more photos - The first one is when I got pulled over in my Corolla:

i wish australia was as photogenic as nz. all we have is desert beach or scrub lol.

original pics probably look better than over processing the image. HDR are nice when used properly, but don't rely on it. the images look over done to me.

I'm not too worried about the photo of the cop, they know where I live if they've got a problem [IMG]. I don't think it's illegal to take photos of them here in New Zealand anyway. I got pulled over for speeding. I was on my way to an airshow and didn't have my radar detector with me. The bugger was sitting on the side of the motorway with his speed gun. Clocked me at 120kph in a 100kph zone. Most expensive photo I've taken, lol. Hope you had a good midnight cruise, sounds fun.

Thanks. Ever since I discovered HDR I've been hooked. When I first started I had haloing all over the place, haha.

Haha thanks dude, pleased you like them.

Thanks for your opinion man. The funny thing is that the original photos look worse than the HDRs due to being severely underexposed. I love how HDR can bring out the details of everything and how it gives a perfect balance across the photo in terms of exposure. It is very easy to go crazy and push it too far though, which I sometimes feel like doing (such as in the bridge photo).

    Here's some non-HDR photos:

Beautiful pics! Good mix of lighting, and space (subject framing). Macro and HDR shots are really nice, not too extreme.

I'd also recommend that you put a watermark or otherwise sign your work, especially if you want to make some money on them or similar work down the road. It will give you some recognition as well - can't argue with some free advertising.

    Hahaha.

Thanks a lot! :D. The macros were taken using my 75-300mm lens. I'd love to invest in a dedicated macro lens someday. Most of the HDRs were taken with 3-exposures (AEB).

Yeah I've been thinking about putting some sort of watermark on my photos. I'm hoping to have a website setup sometime soon so that I can put the address on the photos. My biggest worry is photo theft, but they won't be able to do much with an 800-pixel photo, lol. But as you said, it will be great free advertising. Thanks again for your comment.

Yeah I've had that happen to me once or twice too, either that or they just copy and paste all the auction details, lol. I was meaning more like someone using the photos to sell as large prints or to a calendar company or something.

Yeah I had never seen anything like either until I visited that place. I found out that the tracks were actually used to get cargo off large ships that used to pull in to the wharf. There was a large rusty old hoist behind me that would have been used to pull the carriage up to ground-level. They've got much more efficient ways of offloading cargo nowadays though so it never gets used anymore.

Here's another shot from the same place, taken on a different day when the tide was further out:

Yeah that shouldn't be a problem dude (as long as you don't send it to anyone else, lol). The only problem is that my main computer crapped out about 6-weeks ago and a lot of the original photos that are on it hadn't been backed up yet. I've had a PC expert over though and he said that everything will be salvageable, so I just have to get enough money to do a data recovery. I'm using my laptop as a main computer at the moment, which has all the resized versions since they take up much less space (around 300kb each JPEG) as opposed to 15mb per RAW image. Not quite sure when I'll be getting the data recovery done but I definitely won't forget about your request when I do. I'll most likely send it through email as I don't like uploading high resolution originals online.

It really mostly comes down to luck. There are some occasions where I go back several times to the same location in hope of getting a better shot, but generally it's all luck of the draw. I'm very pleased that you like them :D. The hardest part is finding new places to go. A lot of places I just stumble upon when I'm driving around aimlessly.

Here's one I took at a beach a little while ago. I randomly decided to go there and walked about halfway along the beach when I discovered this stolen and abandoned car half buried in the sand. Always pays to have a camera handy :):

Greats pics! Are you running a filter - circular polarizer or ND filter - on that lens?

How fast is that lens - f/4-5.6?

I'm just blown away by how clear those tele-macro shots are - hard to tell by the subject matter, but I can't see any corner-softness issues that happen with those types of shots, unless you clean up the photos afterwards with a little post-processing.

Thanks mate. Yeah I always use a circular polarizer and a UV filter for all my shots. Yep, you got it, f4-5.6 :). There is very little post-processing work done when I take macros. All I do is resize/sharpen and occasionally blur out any parts that shouldn't be focused. The parts I blur are usually blurred anyway due to the shallow depth of field, but I like to make them slightly more indistinctive. The majority of them don't get touched at all apart from resizing to 800-pixels. I should also mention that all of my macros are taken using manual focus.

Here's some more close-ups taken with the 75-300mm lens (the black background behind the wasp happened naturally due to the flash) -
