Tattoo's in the Work Place

Do you think tattoo's are becoming more acceptable in the professional environment or do you think they are still look down on whether visible or not? i know that most police and fire department do not have tattoo policies.

If you work for corporate or high tier job, no. People just don't seem to take you as seriously.

I have the soviet union tattood on my knee and i dont give a fuck.

our work (bank) says nothing about it.. in fact our CEO and CIO both have full sleeves and wear short sleeves all the time

Depends on the job and the company "culture". I can see where it might be distracting at the workplace, if you have to meet/greet customers and seal multi-million dollar contracts at the government or various DoD agencies. I don't think tattoos will ever live down their
negative stigma in a typical professional, conservative work environment.

Personally, I don't care - unless it is directed at a group or person. Plenty of people have tats, but many are fairly innocuous. The more "colorful ones" - employees cover them up.

But it is true - tattoos are getting more and more prevalent. According to these studies -

- Thirty-six percent of those ages 18 to 25, and 40 percent of those ages 26 to 40, have at least one tattoo, according to a fall 2006 survey by the Pew Research Center.

- A 2006 a study done by the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that 24% of Americans between 18 and 50 are tattooed, the survey also showed that about 36% of Americans age 18 to 29 have at least one tattoo.

it really depends on the workplace, the placement of the tattoos and the size/subject matter of the tattoos. if small and tasteful, workplaces will be less likely to say anything about it.

Quite a few of the people at the bank I go to have visible tat's and no one seems to mind.

My job has no problem with me wearing shorts even with my large tat on my calf, I have gotten some complaints about it thou but mainly from older (50+) customers.

I'm a engineer so I don't take people with tatoos in my work place seriously. But I don't really care if a guy with tatoos is changing my tires or taking my order at a diner.

I don't like that tats are usually linked with low life, immature or under educated people. Just because you have ink doesn't mean your a high school drop out. My Dad has a few tats and he's a psychologist with a masters degree. To me, tats don't mean anything in terms of the individuals capabilities.

A few people get tattoos for a purpose, as in a tribute to someone or something. And then there are people who get tattoos because it looks cool and "why the hell not?" It IS hard to take someone like that seriously, because if they have kind of attitude, what's their work ethic like? Just my two cents and coming from what my previous bosses have told me before.

Just cause someone has ink doesn't mean that you have to look down on them.

I know its becoming more accepting cause I see it more and more at where I work but of course they don't let it get out of hand.

Piercings seem to be more acceptable.

Funny enough my boss HATES piercings but tattoos he is okay with

I guess it can be looked at from this perspective:
If a person you were dealing with was against tat's, you could simply outweigh their hatred with your great personality. If you do not have the human skills to outweigh the persons hate for tats, then the opportunity cost would be that you lose a contract because of your tat.

Sorry business doesn't work that way 99% of the time. Like every boss I've ever had has said, "Perception is reality."

And no matter how great your business personality is, someone with a skull tattoo on their neck is going to be weighed against somebody who doesn't as a professional individual. In most professions tattoo's don't portray professionalism of "clean cut, well groomed and taken care of."

I have tattoos, but if we have costumer's coming in, I roll my sleeves down and they are gone.

Best advice is don't put tattoo's in places that can't be easily covered.

Ok, lets look at it this way. Say your are looking to hire someone from your company. For this purpose, say you interview 2 ppl. The first person only has two tats, one that you can see on their arm and one that you can slightly see on their neck. The second person has no vissible tats, however under their clothes, they are covered on their back, chest and legs. Are you going to hire the one with no visible tats? The person with two vissible tats could have a better personality, but are you going to hire the person without any visible ink just for that reason?

wow, i know at my company (architectural firm) there's a few people with sleeves and the president of a department has visible tattoos on his forearm. i've over heard a younger person in the office (probably 23-27ish) that's a very straight laced and holy than thou kind of person that was talking down about tattoos and "metal" music as being bad. I think it has more to do with where and how people were raised.

i always keep a jacket in the office so i can cover my sleeve if i happen to have a short sleeve shirt on.

being that i have tattoo's, i prefer to look at the work history and experience. of course when i interviewed for the company i am at now, i took out my piercings and wear long sleeved shirts.

My job makes people take off facial piercings and if you have tats on your arms, you have to cover them. I have one on each forearm and I got both my ears pierced. I never had an issue before. My boss said since my forearms aren't too visible then she doesn't mind when I wear short sleeves. I used to have my tongue pierced and they said we'd have to take that out but that never really worked. Especially since we don't work with people face to face.

I think its cool unless you work in a corporate environment. Then if its like full sleeves or some crazy shit, then they gotta cover it up unless its small or discreet.

Depends on the work field I'm hiring in. If I'm hiring in construction, or a truck driver, or a forklift driver or something like that, no. I won't have a preference. If I'm hiring a salesman who meets with customer's all the time, then yes. I'd rather have someone without the visible tattoos.

I think it depends on the nature of your work (and i dont mean in an IQ or hierarchy). I mean if your dealing with people all day it might not be a good idea to have visible tats. people are stupid and will judge you for that. If your dont work with people it really doesnt matter. there are jobs/careers involved in both where intelligent people are needed wether they interact with others or not. Example: you could be writing important computer software for a major company and see only the people you work with; And you could be a mechanic where most of your interaction comes from the service writer and the car your working on. In both cases you dont see many people and tattoos probably would not matter... even if they were on your hands or neck ect... If you were a doctor however or a door to door salesmen where you have to see all sorts of people all the time, you might have a harder time finding work. either way it comes down to how much interaction with the public you have while on the clock.

It's just first impressions. I agree with what JrollS said on how people will judge you right off the bat merely from looking at you.
