Engine Shifter pops out of 4th gear

    Shifter pops out of 4th gear

    All of a sudden today my shifter started popping out of 4th gear. It first happened when my hand was on the shifter, and I thought I may have pushed it up a little. Then it happened a few more times and I wasn't touching the shifter. I know that there were some Toyota transmissions that had this problem, but I never found what the fix was. I read something about Toyota truck manual transmissions that had a problem with the shift lever seat. Could this be the problem? Thanks in advance.

    sux4u.

    dont hold your hand on the shifter because it could cause wear on the gears, and change the shifter bushings, they are pretty cheap, that happened to me before, changed the bushings, success.

    mine did that a couple times. the next day everything was fine. someone told me it could have been bushings or synchros

    You're talking about the shifter linkage bushings under the hood right? Not the bushings at the base of the shifter.

    yeah, there is a DIY from plu here on the forums. but i also did the ones inside. i have no idea what material they were, i know they fixed my problems.

    Did you order them from the same guy on ebay that Plu got his from? I looked on ebay and it says it fits 2003+ Corolla

    I changed the bushings, and now it doesn't slip out of 4th. Thanks Moviestar.

    But for some reason its stiff to put the car into 1st and 2nd, kinda stiff in 3rd and 4th, and 5th and reverse is pretty easy. I lubed the bushings with multipurpose/bearing grease. I'm not sure why its stiffer going to the left than to the right. I might just see if it goes away after a week or so.

    So it is easier to put the car into gear now, but the transmission still slips out of 4th gear. It only happens when I press the gas past a certain point. The problem is that it is becoming worse and I have to accelerate really slowly in 4th gear, which is a problem when I'm getting on the highway. I read in the Haynes manual that it might be the shifter linkage cables, and that I would have to replace them. Any ideas?

    shifter linkage you can check but I'm going to lean more towards the fact that your transmission maybe going out. More specifically, your 4th gear syncros are f'ed up. I don't remember what year your car was but if your car has 5th gear, i would say one option is to go from 3rd to 5th. Or you can do what The Car talk guys sometimes recommends which is to get a bungee cable and hook it so that once your in 4th gear, you hook the cable to the shifter so it will stay in 4th.

    Btw, how many miles do you have on your car and what year is it?

    If you need to stay in 4th gear, can't you just hold the shifter for a little bit? I know it's not exactly safe to do so, but I drive one-handed as it is. My other one is resting on the shifter anyway.

    doing that is the way to ruin your transmission actually. anyone who is experienced in driving a stick also knows not to rest your hands on the shifter.

    Next step would be cables, sorry to hear it didn't work out for you. It helped me greatly. Try the shifter cables, they are easy enough to do solo.

    I have a 2000 with 140k miles. I think you might be right, because today I would keep my foot on the gas a little and pop the clutch and it didn't slip out of gear. So I guess its not making a good shift, which would have to do with the synchros. Crap...I guess I can deal with this for a while.

    Also my transmission has had a leak for a while and I have to fill the oil sometimes. I fixed the output shaft seals a couple weeks ago and it doesn't leak anymore.

    I probably should have mentioned that in the beginning.

    Ok so why do people recommend the bungee cable thing then? I've only driven one car that had a manual transmission, and it was only for a couple weeks.

    the bungee cable is something that i first heard from the click and clack brothers and later found out a couple of years later that others also have come up with a similar temporary fix. At first it was funny as hell to me but it actually works.

    But it's still not recommended though right? It would seem that a bungee cable would have more tension than just slightly holding it in place. But either way it's a moot point, because he can skip 4th I suppose.

    Its not recommended but usually if you are at that point where you need to result to the bungee action, you're also looking at a failing transmission therefore either way, your trannys gonna go out. So if that is the case, if you want to squeeze out a little more life out of your tranny, i would say go for it.
